Is it correct that you can still keep Sky+ PVR functions with an old Sky blue card ?

We will soon be out of contract with Sky and one of my friends has advised me that we can still use the Sky + PVR recording functions if we can get an Sky blue subscription card.

Is this correct and, if so, how can we get one ?

We will check with our parents to see if they have any of the cars as we know that some of them have been with Sky for many years.

I was lucky as I found our own blue card.

I think the best way would be to look for a sky+ box with one inside from the person upgrading to sky hd.

Once you stop your Sky sub the PVR functions will cease to work, and you will lose access to any pre-recorded programmes (as the decryption will cease to operate). You'll need to pay Sky £10 a month if you want to continue to use Sky+. Having a new card does not make an difference, all the card does is give you access to the few FTA channels that are encrypted.
If you want PVR functionality then it's better to switch to a Freesat PVR rather than pay £120pa forever.

Not strictly true macman.

Some blue (yellow house) cards still allow recording of FTA (not FTV) channels. In the majority of cases, the criteria appears to be that the card was removed from the STB before the subscription was cancelled and was left out of the box for quite an extended period (I've heard 3 months).

Bear in mind though that such a card will not work in any STB that has ever had a white card in it.

And, in addition, the card must have supported a Sky+ subscription originally.

I disagree, we use a second hand Sky HD box that came with a white card in it. The Blue card works fine.

My experience is that the old blue card has to be one with Sky+ active on it that was replaced with a new "white" card in the card swap update. It does not need to have been not used after the swap as Sky apparently omitted to turn off the Sky+ functions when the encryption changed to the latest version. I have two such cards that work perfectly for recording non encrytped channels in any Sky+HD box (regardless of whether it had a white card used in it or not) but will not work in the two Sky+ SD boxes I have although these have had white cards used in them.
