Hopefully posting in time for autism awareness day, got this sent to me and I cried, as you know my DS has ASD:
Please don’t try to judge me,
Just because I’m not like you.
You may not understand me,
Or understand the things I do.
You often stand and stare at me,
When I meltdown in the street.
You think that I don’t see you
Because my eyes and your’s don’t meet.
Your world and mine are different,
I don’t see things as you do.
You may see a field of flowers,
I will see a drop of dew.
Loud noises often scare me,
I may spin, and flap or shout.
Children may try to play with me,
Yet I seem to shut them out.
You see, its hard to see I’m different,
For on the outside I’m like you.
You often think I’m naughty
With the things I sometimes do.
But I don’t choose to hurt you,
Or to break the rules each day.
I don’t mean to make you mad,
When I have to run away.
I sometimes need to be alone,
I just need a little space.
The world can be so hard for me,
It can feel a scary place.
My skin can hurt when you touch me,
And my ears hurt when you shout.
If to many things are happening,
I cant work my senses out.
If you could try to understand me,
Just walk a mile into my world,
See what Autism is all about,
Some of my mysteries unfirl,
For I want to be accepted,
I just don’t know where to start.
I know my mind is different,
But my heart is like your heart.
My eyes cry tears like yours do,
My heart feels love and pain,
We all have things that scare us,
But for me its wind and rain.
If you want to make a difference,
Then try to see the good not bad.
I’m Autistic, I’m not naughty,
And please don’t blame my mum and dad.
There the one’s that understand me,
They love me for who I am.
They don’t judge me, or condemn me.
But feel proud to hold my hand.
They fight my every battle,
By my side, they stand up tall,
Understand me when I melt down,
And pick me up each time I fall.
There are many others like me,
But we’re all different and unique,
Autism is all around you,
In your neighbourhood, or street.
If I ask of you just one thing,
Then see my world, as I see yours,
Learn about the path that I walk,
Open windows, and open doors.
Remove the ignorance around us,
Stop the judging and the stares,
Help and love me, don’t condemn me,
Answer both my parents prayers
