not too sure....landlord thinks that something came loose in the cistern but that wouldnt explain the horrible smell

Vinegar in a dish is good for removing nasty niffs? Otherwise you've got something somewhere you need to get some bleach on. Drying it out will also help.

One of the joints in the heating pipes is leaking by the sound of it.

Most times when I come across this it's the cold water tank over flowing.

Thank you both. Plumber is coming back tomorrow so he wont be allowed to leave until we know its sorted.

There hasnt been any dripping since this morning :-)
