How to appear on yahoo, google... ???

Hello,

I am just setting up my business... I have created a website but I have no idea how to make it appear in yahoo and google search engine>=? Can anyone help and tell me how much it cost to advertise? Hopefully not too much I am on a low starting bugget.

If you log into your domain management, you might be able to submit it for indexing from there (123-reg certainly does, not sure about others). You can also pay for Google AdWords to get some clickthroughs. It's also good practice to include good metatags in your pages and have well written bot readable text on your site, especially the home page.

You can use Google sitemaps to offer Google an easy way to spider all the pages on your site. The same xml file can be given to yahoo to do the same thing. This site will generate the sitemap in the correct format

You can manually submit your sites to the search engines but they look at all sorts to decide whether your site appears on page 1 in google or page 10,000. Can a high listing so that people see you is a hotly debated topic with some search engine specialists charging thousands!
What does work well as already suggested is google adwords where you bid per click to your website on keywords or phrases such as jewellery or good jewellery. The more popular keywords and phrases cost more and can be anything up to £10 a click! You can however decide how much you'll pay for each click and how much budget you'll spend per day on it. The good thing about adwords is they give you a month 'credit' before taking the money so you can start small and build up your budget.

Submitting your site to the main search engines is quite easy, and recommended. If you don't submit it, there's no guarantee it'll get picked up by all of them.

Just go to google, msn, yahoo and search them for 'add url to google' or 'add url to msn' etc., you will get search results where you will see the 'official' google pages come up with 'add your website' or similar.

Avoid anything where companies charge for this privilege - unless you are happy to pay them, of course. You don't need to pay to submit your site to the main search engines though as you can do this so easily yourself.

I submitted my site to the search engines myself and it was no bother. Key ones I'd recommend are :-

Google
MSN
Yahoo!

Those three then feed other engines such as Ask, Aol, Altavista etc. which means you don't then have to go to Altavista and so on to submit your site, it will happen organically anyway.

I'd also recommend you get some decent backlinks i.e. other (decent quality/relevant) sites linking to yours. You don't have to pay for this, necessarily, just be picky with who you contact and don't be afraid to offer a reciprocal link back to the site you contact (provided you have a links page and are happy to link to them). Don't go overboard though, loads of poor links won't be doing anybody any favours. The links page on my site is the fifth most visited, so I am quite picky about who I add. Search engines sometimes pick new sites up quicker if they notice links from other sites going in to them.

It can take a few days or sometimes a few weeks for the search engines to 'crawl' (i.e. pick up) your new site. Then, it can take anything from a few weeks to a few months for you to start appearing properly on the likes of Google. It all depends on the quality of your site (i.e. unique, user-useful content) and the number of decent backlinks from other sites which you have linking to yours.

Most sites maintain 2 sets of listings...

Natural - these are free, most will eventually pick up your site by finding links from pages already listed and following them but you can speed up the process by submitting them to the engines. The different engines have their own methods of ranking sites and the exact algorithm to do this is a closely guarded corporate secret but there are plenty of companies out there that do nothing but try and work it out and then sell their services to try and improve your natural listings (and therefore there are also plenty of sites giving their own opinion for free - search for the term Search Engine Optimisation or SEO).

Paid for/ Sponsored - these are generally the listings that appear at the top or side of the pages and as the name suggests you pay for them appearing there. You basically pay a fixed amount for different keywords and each time someone searches for your keywords your page will list - depending how much you pay dictates how far down you appear. Google operate a system where you can set a monthly amount you want to spend and they will optimise your spend for you... unfortunately this can mean you are only getting the more unpopular words/ times etc but then you can be getting 20 times the number of adverts showing compared to paying for the high cost words during their most popular times.

There are lots of free ways to get listed and high up the rankings. I'm no 3 in google for the best keyword for my field and I haven't paid a penny. I say start out small and then if you need it consider paying. Maybe look at the story of how Martin started this website with just £100.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a hot topic for debate with many different view points. Read as much as you can and make your own decisions. Google it and you'll find lots of information and tools to help you.

Quality backlinks as said before are good (best if they are related to what you do). One quality backlink is worth more than 100 links from spam sites.

Content is key and is sometimes something people forget. If you are selling items it doesn't mean you cannot put original content on your site as well. This will provide people something to read and may make them more likely to come back and provide the search engine spiders with more words to associate with you. Again pick your topics wisely i.e. related, write concise articles and do not try and write them for the search engines by spamming keywords. Remember humans will be reading this too.

If you are in a young trendy kind of market e.g. selling body boards or something like that that would have a young appeal consider getting a myspace blog as again it's free advertising. You can link to your website, put up latest information, contact a generation of bloggers etc.

Consider selling old stock or seconds or something like that if appropriate on ebay or having a small presence on ebay as you can have an about me page and you can link to your real website.

You can add your homepage to your profile on this site so people can click on it. Be warned it may not always be best to advertise your site on forums especially if you give a lot of advice. People may lurk and take offense at what you say and may try and use your website information to make it personal. Yes some people are that weird.

I personally think it’s the small things and attention to detail that add up to get you up the listings. Silly things like making sure all your pages have a link back to your home page sometimes get forgotten. Are you in the yellow pages? Yell.com?

These are just a few. I’ve forgotten many things, this is why I suggest research yourself online.

and in the top 4 pages of google,...obviously in the area we are promoting ,but the msn page is the first of 11,110,000 sites, so must be doing something good!


All we have spent is £30 on google adwords
