  • A classic 1960s evening dress, Carnegie (a good make) - a black velvet bodice, with a black taffeta skirt striped in shocking pink and gold - £10, and perfect for a friend's daughter who's got her first prom coming up. Plus a DVD set of the Thorn Birds (about 10 hours of nostalgia) for £1.50!
  • A pristine, latest edition of one of the garden "Expert" series (Veg & Herb Expert) for a quid. Full of alarming pictures of nasties that can attack your veg though. Charity shops always seem to have a great selection of gardening books.

It is possible that I may be back tomorrow with an unbelievable charity shop find involving a Victorian Jet or bog oak brooch for £6, however, so far, last week's coup was a crystal and silver serving dish (crystal divided shallow bowl in a silver framework) with four little silver forks. The middle of the crystal bowl is round and it has a little silver "dome". £8

Perfect for Saturday night when a few friends came round to eat and chat. The centre contained the dip and the four outer segments contained cruditees! So colourful and pretty.

Went to Kenilworth today where there are several well kept charity shops.

Bought a man's t shirt (for my son) from the shop in the square (can't remember which charity now- Scope?) and men's clothes are 2 for 1 so got him a second t shirt!

Also found this website today which may be useful. Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread before:

According to that website, the other "rose" county doesn't exist either. Wonder where my village charity shop is then , Brigadoon?

Thanks for your good wishes Toozy. I am looking at my brooch now and cannot decide what it is, but have an idea what it isn't:

It has a definite "grain", so I don't think it's Vulcanite or Gutta Percha.

It isn't cold or highly shiny, so it's not "French Jet" (black glass).

But, the pin is attached by two little screws rather than the more common black adhesive, so it's probably not jet.

I think it may be bog oak.

    That's okay, too!
