Decent Hotel in Tynemouth?

hi, looking to pick the brains of the Geordies!

My brother lives in Tynemouth and his kid is being christened at the end of May. I'm looking for a really nice hotel to stay in within driving distance to Tynemouth - I don't know the area and I've tried googling, but I'm aware that a lot of the hotels in that area might be taken over by stag weekends and I want to try and avoid that as he gave me the name of a local hotel and it's taken over for a wedding and the only available room was above the function suite! I'm not looking for a travellodge type hotel, but perhaps some type of country type hotel that's maybe within 3/4 of an hour drive away?

Many thanks.

You'll need a hotel in Whitley Bay for Tynemouth, try https://www.tripadvisor.com., if nothing in there, try the northumberland tourist office

    Hi alyth

Grand Hotel in Tynemouth is really nice. Also Village Hotel Newcastle which is about a twenty minute drive from Tynemouth. Avoid Whitley Bay too many stag parties.

The Grand Hotel was the one my brother told me to contact liames, but the only room they could offer was above their function suite where a function was booked until midnight, and as the christening is early on the Sunday morning I didn't fancy listening to loads of people enjoying themselves!

The Village Hotel looks absolutely gorgeous, but as it's only really somewhere to bed down rather than a weekend away it's a bit expensive. I'll contact the tourist office tomorrow and see if they could recommend a B&B or something, thanks for your suggestions.

Which direction would you be travelling from?
  • According to https://www.viamichelin.com Slaley is 50 mintues from Tynemouth. Slaley Hall is a marvellous country hotel look here: http://www.devere.co.uk/Hotels/Slaley/

If that is out of budget there are a lot of superb bed and breakfast establishments listed at https://www.bedandbreakfastnationwide.co.uk.

    Hope this helps.

I'm travelling from Scotland, so I'm assuming I go down the A1 and then turn off for Tynemouth somewhere off that, I've never been there!

There is a B&B in Tynemouth itself, called Martineau, which looks fine, but we'd thought about treating ourselves to somewhere nice as we didn't really want to go to the christening, but of course the christening is the last bank holiday weekend in May and many places are going to be really busy....

Slaley is absolutely gorgeous, just the type of place, it looks brilliant so will contact them! Thanks for that, I appreciate it.

Matfen Hall is beautiful - take a look http://www.matfenhall.com/

I would guess it would be less than 45 mins from Tynemouth but it does look quite expensive.

Slayley is rather expensive though, apparently celebs to the area stay there. A post you made earlier you were saying its only to lay your head down so might not be what you are looking for.

Cant help with other Hotels in Tynemouth, sorry.

it is really only somewhere to stay for the Saturday night Eagle, but as we have to trail down south for something we don't really want to go to anyway we thought we might try and stay somewhere really nice, and try and avoid the family gathering on the Saturday night!

A nice country house hotel is Horton Grange. My daughter got married there. Near the A1 and A19 for access to Tynemouth. https://www.horton-grange.co.uk

If you are coming down the A68/A696, a much nicer, more scenic drive than the A1, try Otterburn Towerwww.otterburntower.com/ or The Percy Arms https://www.thepercyarms.com/. You should be able to make Tynemouth in under an hour.

Closer, about 20-30 minutes from Tynemouth is Stone Cottage B&B 01661 823957, or the Diamond Inn https://www.thediamondinn.co.uk/accommodation.htm, both in Ponteland.

    Hope that helps.
