New Cat - good value cat litter?

Options
Our old cat passed away last year and I've finally given in to the kid's constant cries of 'when are we getting a new cat?'. We've been to the rescue centre and picked out a cat and, all being well with the home visit, should have her with us next Saturday.

Our old cat didn't use a cat litter tray as he spent half his life outdoors. Consequently, I can't remember the last time I bought any cat litter.

So, the question is, is there any particularly good cat litter in the shops, as in value, odour-eating etc, or is it all pretty much the same?

I'm not loyal to any one particular supermarket so am happy to go wherever is recommended.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers, Birdy

Asda do a smart price cat litter for £2.81 for a 10 litre bag,it's wood based so doesn't smell & really economical as it turns to sawdust when wet, plus it's biodegradable.
I prefer this type as does Daisy cat.Good luck on the your new furry owner...

To add,a bag does Miss Daisy around a month,I use about a mug full to top it up after I remove the soiled stuff, changing it completely once a week.

I use Tesco Value cat litter. I don't see the point in spending a lot of money on something the cat pees on then gets chucked in the bin!

The value stuffs OK but I find it kicks up a lot of dust that covers my kettle, works surface ect near where the litter tray is tho...not so with the wood stuff.
  • I find the value clumping stuff is really dusty (and I'm allergic to dust so it's not an option to me) - it also goes into an almost concrete type lump when it's wet ....

The Mr A wood litter is their value range and lasts really well - I must say my two must pee more than Spike's Daisy :rotfl:as a bag lasts a week between them which would break down to 2 bags each / month.

Still at under £6 / cat for a good quality litter which is easy to clean & really keeps smells under control, I'm really happy with that!

Mine is in the understairs cupboard, so I don't have that problem!

Congratulations on your new puss :T

In relation to the part of your post I have bolded - the answer is no! There are loads of different cat litters, and all have their fans and their haters!

Firstly, you need to decide if you want clumping or non-clumping. Clumping ones clump the wee, so you just scoop it out, non-clumping ones absorb wee and you don't have to scoop (though you do with poo) (obviously).

Personally, I prefer clumping as I like to remove the waste rather than it being left in the tray as I personally believe non-clumping litters have more odours than clumping.

Once you have decided on the above you then have a further choice: with non-clumping there are wood-based, recycled paper-based, crystal based litters.

With clumping, there are clay-based and natural based. I used to use clay based but don't any more. It is a great clumper, but there are dangers if it is eaten by cats (some kittens are pretty bad for doing that) and also it is not very environmentally friendly and is also very heavy.

So I use OKO Plus which you can get from Pets at Home, or online at sites such as Zooplus. I like it as it is made from natural plant fibres which clump very well and also mask odours well. It also has the benefit of being flushable down the loo, but I don't do this (I use degradable nappy sacks to put the waste in and then put in wheelie bin).

Phew! Sorry for the long post, but asking about what cat litter you should get is a little like asking how long is a piece of string :rotfl:

maybe useful to get whatever cat was used to before you get them & by trial mix another sort with it until cat settles into new home & take it from there. Change isn't something cats like so you may need to adapt over time.

I use Catsan but when I run out I have to get the one that co-op do.
Catsan I like as it is like stones so the dust doesn't get everywhere and I find it masks smells better, I clean the litter box full ( empty, disinfect, dry) every 2-3 days though so if you were scooping out instead then it probably would last longer.
