I live in a development of 109 properties. I shall advise other residents who may wish to check their own electrical instalation.

I foresee the risk of a kiddy crawling into a kitchen unit and touching a bare wire and being electrocuted. I would feel responsible if I did not do all I could to mitigate that risk.

This new build should have been inspected by building control officer. I shall complain to the council. They may be able to identify who did the work and who inspected / certified it.

That will not help me, but may encourage them to take a bit more care in future.

    Good point.

I have spoken with the council. Apparently, contractors now self certify and there is no requirement for even a spot check on the quality of their work. Our council no longer employ any inspectors.

As Knighstyle said, we no longer have anyone to protect the home owner from cowboy builders. What a crock of horse manure.

    Caveat emptor?

Did you not get a load of certified bump explaining how the system had been installed and recommending regular future examinations of all the wiring?

I have just had some extra wiring added in and an extra small circuit breaker type customer unit with off switch added next to my bang and blue flash existing fuse board. The poor b*gg*r who did it must have spent almost as much time filling in the bumph as actually doing the wiring connections.

    Caveat emptor?

I hardly think caveat emptor exists as an excuse for workmen doing shoddy, sub-standard work.

Any competent DIY person could have done a better job and been liable for prosecution for failing to comply with Part P certification.

If, as I suspect, this is in Scotland then you should be aware that Part P doesn't apply there, it's England and Wales only. SELECT are reposible for registration of competent electricians in Scotland.

And for KNIGHTSTYLE - whoever told you NICEIC don't inspect us Electricians anymore was talking cobblers - of course they do, as any NICEIC registered electrician will tell you, seeing as they have to pay over £400 a year for the priviledge of being inspected anually! They don't inspect every single job we do - but they never have!

zax47 It was the representative from NICEIC who told me!
I was so appalled at the standard of the electrical work in my new build that I asked them to come and inspect the work. After much stalling on their part they admitted they no longer do inspections. They said I should get the electricians back to rectify the faults but there is no way I would let those cowboys back into my house.

I don't give a rat's !!!! if the sparky is called Jock, wears a kilt and the trade body has a different name. Self certification in the UK is a license for cowboys to exploit the homeowner.
