It gets worse - Primary Drive 1 not found hit F1

  • Before you took your slave drive out was it connected to the same IDE channel as the master drive, i.e. were they both on the same ribbon cable?

In a computer with two IDE channels (no SATA) you should see something in the BIOS like:

    IDE CHANNEL 0
    Primary Master
    Primary Slave

    IDE CHANNEL 1
    Secondary Master
    Secondary Slave

Usually your OS disk is Chan 0 master. Chan 1 master is usually a CDROM and Chan 1 slave a DVDROM. A second hard disk is normally Chan 0 slave.

Ok on my laptop atm so can figure this out while my machine is in bits.

I have 2 HDD in my machine a 1) 40 gb (win xp installed) and a 2) 160gb (for storage)

The 1 drive was pretty sure on Cable Select and the Slave drive not sure what it was on but just checked and the jumpers are on Master so not sure if that is right or not.

They were on a double IDE cable going to the same slot on my motherboard. As i've taken everything out pretty sure the main drive was on the first and the slave on the second.

I have gone back to the one i had with the machine for the moment just to try and figure this out.

I havent played with anything only thing i've done was remove my ram install new ram that did not work (other thread) and then HDD did not work.

Thanks for the help guys it's appricated

  • Check my edit.

The OS drive that you have left in can be jumpered to either CS or Master.

Ok my PC is very strange

I just put the old IDE cable in and my 2nd HDD and put the main too CS and the 2nd to Master and it works BUT (AHHHHHH)

When it loads i thought shut it down and try again no problem loaded fine

But when i hit restart it ended on the same screen again.

Big window and out this thing goes i think
  • On the IDE ribbon cable the master connector is at the end and the slave connector is in the middle. Attach your OS disk to the master connector and make sure it is jumpered to Master or CS. Attach your second disk to the slave connector and make sure it is jumpered to Slave or CS.
