Diesel Automatic
Options
Hi,
I'm on the market for a car - and I need an automatic car
My previous one was a 2.0 Mondeo with terrible mpg of 24
so for the new one I'm looking for 1.6 or less with MPG being my top priority and so far Hyundai i30 is the one that ticks all the boxes
New HYUNDAI I30 DIESEL HATCHBACK 1.6 CRDi Active 5d Auto (MPG 51.4)
yes it is a diesel that's not an issue, and on an average I do 320 miles a week,
all I need to know how good Hyundai's are especially in terms Auto gearbox.
Please post your thoughts

Does it have to be new?You can get VW golf diesels with the dsg box and still get really good mpg.It can be used as a full auto or you can manually select.
Some Audis share the same box, so maybe the Skoda and Seats do too.0 -

Not hearing good things about the VW group dsg box, seems to have a reputation for giving up the ghost the very day the manufacturers warranty expires.0 -
Hyundai use a proper auto gearbox, and unlike most of the competition are prepared to warrant it for 5 years unlimited mileage.
You do roughly 15k miles a years so by the time the warranty expires you will have covered 75k.
You might be better off getting the Kia Ceed instead, engine and box virtually the same, warranty 7 years or 100k.
That should see you fully warranted for the full 7 years, don't know any other maker prepared to guarantee their product like that, except Toyota, who come close but then you can't have a proper auto in the small/medium FWD models.0 -
If you are thinking about any of these cars, I'd join the relevant owners' forums and ask about fuel consumption. 51 real world mpg is probably pushing it a bit.0

Mixed reports on them, the vast majority of people are very happy and wouldn't go back to a manul/conventional automatic.
I was thinking about getting one myself so have done a lot of online research.I like the idea of how they drive but ultimately I would pick a manual, "just in case".0 -
If you had a Mondeo diesel auto that returned only 24mpg, then there was something wrong with it.
My Mondeo Mk4 2.0 diesel estate auto returns 44-46mpg on average, and a manual should return almost 50mpg."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

Online research won't give you a feel of how well they drive.
I've driven several and, in my opinion, they compare poorly to a conventional auto. I'd rather take the hit on the fuel consumption and have a smooth drive. I tend to keep my cars for a long time and I have also read too many stories of huge bills to fix just out of warranty DSG equipped cars.0 -

Even if it was a petrol engined car, it sounds like there was something seriously wrong with it ... or the driver.
It may be the OP could do a lot worse than check out MSE Martin's suggestions

It's got to be a petrol at that mpg.0
