Blue Badge and Where Can I Park?!

Hello!

This is my first post on here so hello!

I have recently been awarded a blue badge on behalf of my Daughter. She was a prem baby who is now 3 months old and she is on oxygen 24 hours a day. We got a badge as we need to have medical equipment with us at all times.

Now I have a lot of appointments to take her to at the hospital and was wondering where I can park with my badge. At the Children's unit there is a hatched area near the entrance that is for dropping off and picking up and has a max waiting time of 20 minutes. Would I be Ok to park there or could I be clamped/given a ticket? It is a large area so I wouldn't be stopping other people using it for dropping off and ambulances don't use this area. I often see people with parking tickets parked on the hatched area, they never have a blue badge displayed and I assume they are just parking up and staying for more than 20 minutes.

I would park in the main car park, but its quite far away and all the disabled spots are always taken up. Parking in a regular spot would be impossible as I need enough room to open my door wide and put my pram close to the car so I can move my Daughter and the oxygen at the same time.

I hope that makes sense! Only just got the badge and I have no idea what is allowed!

Thanks for reading!

  • Janninew, along with the badge you will have been given a 'time clock' and a 'blue badge rule book'

All individual hospitals vary, put simply you are allowed to park in a blue badge bay when displaying your blue badge correctly'

    - a "hatched area near the entrance that is for dropping off and picking up" means just that ! so you would be breaking the rule and might well be clamped for doing so.

    - "so I wouldn't be stopping other people using it for dropping off and ambulances don't use this area" here you have has a badge for days and are trying to self-justify breaking the rules, and might well be clamped for doing so.

    - "its quite far away and all the disabled spots are always taken up" join the gang Janninew, most BB holders cant walk at all, you can. You like others will have to drive round in circles for an hour to find a spot just like all the other BB users.

    - "I need enough room to open my door wide and put my pram close to the car so I can move my Daughter and the oxygen at the same time" most BB users do - that's precisely why they have wide bays.

Now Janninew, I'm sure you think I'm being harsh with you, and I am, in order that you understand the rules. Most hospitals now have private profit orientated clamping companies doing the deed for them. As a new BB holder, you now know that given even half a chance they will clamp and fine you, that's how they make their living. Most places are camera controlled based on the registration number of the vehicle, so your assumption that they "park in a hatched area, without a BB displayed and get away with it" may well be a fragile assumption.

BB users come in many forms, some are perfectly normal looking and perfectly normal walking people but all are disabled or they would not have a Blue Badge. We all see parking abused every minute of the day in hospitals by BB holders and non-BB holders alike, I am on record as saying all should be prosecuted, because they all knew what they intended to do was wrong before the parked in that spot. The best chance for BB users in a hospital is if all vehicle users obey the rules.

    - see #19 and NOTE : my comment "also displaying your blue badge correctly" read the BB rule book !

What an unfriendly reply, I'm sorry I posted on this part of the board. I would never want to break the rules, hence my post asking. You admit you have been harsh so that I don't get clamped - I would have understood perfectly if you weren't harsh!

At my local hospital and in town blue badge holders seem to park on double yellows, hatched areas, anywhere basically as there is a a lack of spaces, I was just wondering if this was allowed - I understand now that they are parking were they shouldn't.

Also if you read my post correctly I said the folk who park in the hatched area without a blue badge often have tickets/get clamped, not that they are 'getting away with it' - it wasn't a 'fragile assumption that I could park there.

    Thanks for your post though.

Now you know it's not allowed janninew, information you might well later be pleased you had 'rammed' into you. In BB terms you are no more nor less special / disabled than any other BB user.

Your #1 post never mentioned town and none of my post related to town - only to hospital parking. You are correct that I misunderstood the issuing of 'tickets' in the drop~off~zone', on that one I was remiss and apologise.

In #2 I said all hospitals vary, yours like most will be under-served for wide bays you will find its an unforgiving world, one in which you will find all BB users want 'the one next to the door'.

I do realise my daughter is no more special or disabled than any other blue badge user, I never suggested she was. I only came on here to check so I wasn't breaking any laws.

Also I'm not bothered about having a spot next to the door, as long as I can get my baby and her oxygen out of the car, I have no problem walking from the furthest disabled spot to the hospital.

I did not say your daughter, I said "" you are no more nor less special / disabled than any other BB user "". You I assume [unless you correct me] you are in fact able bodied, but, quite properly have surrogate Blue Badge rights.

You will find that closest or furthest will probably be your smallest problem, finding even one empty bay in time for your appointment will be your first and most important issue.

If you live in Scotland you dont get a time clock. We had to apply for one to use when we were going for a holiday in England.:)
  • In my local hospital you can park anywhere, but you still have to pay for parking as its privately owned.
  • Just a suggestion- are there any council car parks nearby to the hospital?? It might be best (and cheaper) in the long run for you to park there- but there is a max of 3 hours in which you can park (it says this on the clock). Rules may be different in Scotland. I don't know if you realise this- but you can go through some tolls for free with a Blue badge, so if you travel through one regularly its worth ringing up and asking about it (it will give a number in the blue badge handbook). You may near to stop in the drop off area to drop her off, and then move your car to the main car park - and do the opposite when you leave. This would obviously require either another person too stay with your daughter, or the permission of the ward staff to look after her so you're not leaving her unattended.
