OP - the garage should be allowed to repair each fault 3 times I think before you would be able to reject. Dunno what's wrong with your handbrake but if you've already got a clutch out of them FOC it's worth sticking with it.
Parking on a hill. Plenty of cars, even with disc brakes at the rear, have brake drums inside, which the handbrake applies. These are pretty rubbish. Also, if your handbrake does apply to a disc (especially the front discs like the Citroen Xantia for example) there is a real risk that you'll be applying the handbrake on a hot disc. This disc will then get slightly smaller when it cools down, the grip of the handbrake will be lost, and the car will roll if not on a flat surface. For these reasons, it's a really good idea to just park in gear all the time.
On hills, why not just point into and out of the kerb, just in case of failure of both of the above systems?0 -
Indeed, there are regular tales of cars with handbrake operated disk brakes rolling down the hill as the disks cool (and therefore contract).
I get the reverse, the handbrake sticks on. Some cars have a small drum within the disc assembly for handbrake purposes. I've had several cars where it sticks on when left for a while, pug 406, hyundai i10 and pug 307.
And I found my last car, an 09 x-type jaguar, in the middle of the road one day. The handbrake had slipped and rolled off my drive.
Got me both ways, I always used to park in gear but my present car is an automatic with an electric handbrake. Waiting to see what happens as time goes on :cool:0 -

Ill park up normally, then if i think the car is going to roll down the hill, then ill put it into reverse gear witht he clutch up, release the handbrake holding the car on the foot brake until the car stops through the reverse gear. Then ill put the handbrake on, and away i go.
First the car has to jump out of reverse gear, then the handbrake has to fail/be released.
Facing up the hill - park it in first gear - facing down, park in reverse.0 -
not to sure they want to explore but a fault
you are going to get the pee extracted from you for many many years if you dont start to ask, even if you dont have a clue what they are on about you can always ask someone else later, but if they want to check a possible fault, ask them what fault0
