Forgot my Road Tax renewal

As the title says - my Road Tax expired on the 29th Feb (I'd had the reminder 3 weeks previously).

I usually renew via 'phone.

I was away on business the last week of Feb (not an excuse, just a fact) and it slipped my mind.

A colleague parked beside my car yesterday after lunch and advised me that my tax disc was out of date.

I immediately renewed by 'phone and am now waiting for the new disc to arrive - (by Wed/Thus I hope).

Questions are two-fold.

1. Should/Can I drive the car in the meantime?

2. What penalties do I run the risk of?

Failure to Display could be one of them.

I think you are given a 5 day grace period if you buy online or on the phone?

If you buy online or over the phone BEFORE the end of the month when the previous disc expires, then you have 5 working days' grace in order to allow sufficient time for the tax disc to arrive.

That would not specifically apply in the OP's scenario.

it can take 5 working days to arrive and in the meantime as said you run the risk of being fined
park it away from little jobsworths till it comes
i did the same last week by the way but taxed it in the post office

They arent little jobsworths, they are doing a legitimate job, finding people who dont or wont pay their car tax.

Its not a case of parking it away OP, all police cars are fitted with number plate recognition apparatus so you could be spotted at any time you are on the road driving it.

OP made a mistake
he wont get done by real policemen but will get done by jobsworth policemen which is why i said park it away from jobsworths
he wont get done by the system but he might get done by the jobsworth

I dont see your point, I know the OP made a mistake, been there done that, it happens. I know it wasnt deliberate, but there are thousands who do do it deliberately.

It was you calling policemen jobsworths that I object to.

So in your definition, what is the difference between a real policemand and a jobsworth policeman.

they are after real bad uns not people who forgot to pay their gas bill on time

as i said i was out last week in my truck and hadnt realised the tax was out
i drove it across country waiting for my temporary cover note to come because apparently insurance now dont send full certificates out straight away anymore allegedly so i couldnt tax even if i had wanted to till it came
and this was a straight carry on insurance no changes
