Renault Scenic - is this a good deal?

Options
Anyone know if this is a good deal:

2004 Renault Scenic, 58 000 miles, automatic.

needs a road spring seller estimates cost at 350

needs an engine defuser estimated cost 650 (these mechanical

terms are translated since the seller is not English)

If we ask them to do the repairs they want £2k

If we take the car and do the repairs ourselves they want 1k

Is this going to be more trouble than it's worth or good deal?

Also is it best to pay 2k and get them to do the repairs?

Thanks in advance

why are they not fixing it putting 12 month MOT on it

Seems to be a few around the £2k mark on autotrader.

whats the rest of the history look like,
  • No deal for a Renault Scenic is ever good.

I had the ordeal of owning one for 3 years. Auto, had similar mileage and honestly spent more time being fixed than it spent on the road. The gearbox went at around 70K and cost over £1000 to have it reconditioned. The only reason I didn't scrap it then was because 3 months earlier I'd spent over £1000 on repairs. It was an utter nightmare, cost a good few thousand in repairs each year. I got rid as soon as I could, just cut my losses and got shot, it was at the point where I couldn't go out in traffic as it constantly overheated. I had gallons of water in the boot just in case I got stuck in traffic. I would sit in traffic desperate for somewhere to pull into watching the needle getting higher and higher.

I can't stress how awful it was.

My friend bought one a couple of years ago, I think that's a 54, she calls it the skip, is desperate to get rid of it but has spent so much money on it she feels she has to keep it.
    Clean credit file:12 mths

    THE PLAN: 1.Pay off debt £8808.42(£3254.45, £1570.32, £2698.33, £0:dance:, £1000, £285.32) 2.Save monthly for Christmas/insurance etc £150 per month 3.Save for emergencies /£1500 4.Save for our B&B £????depends which one takes our fancy :D

agree,A work mate had one (manual) and actually made a point of leaving home 40 minutes earlier than he needed to begin work because he was never sure if it would start in the morning and he didnt want to miss the bus if it didnt, this was despite having it serviced regularly,he always said it must have been female as it was forever going into a mood and just refusing to start for no obvious reason.:(

The Auto boxes on this era French Auto's are an absolute and utter nightmare, I have had two as my wife will only drive autos , both developed the exact same dangerous gearbox fault, jumping in to limp mode randomly.
A quick google will point you to thousands with the same exact problem, it is a software fault with the box ecu and worn wiring and nobody has ever managed to find a fix.
My advice on buying a second hand French auto with this box is to leave it well alone or you will regret it.

PS. Low mileage on these is a warning sign, not a bonus, you can not run many miles up stuck in third gear after you have drove 4 or five miles.

My parents had a 97 petrol automate scenic for 5 years, other than fan belt starting to shred it was faultless. Wife's parents have a grand espace and that is useless, had 1000's spent on repairs.

F1 technology of course. Ah, hold on, this is a Scenic.

I think he might have meant either the engine cover (not sure why this would need replacing) or more likely the engine undertray/mudguard?

Run away. I'm pretty sure with the numbers on the road Renault must have some reliable cars, but after the original Espace (and they had their flaws) and 21, the quality and reliabilty of the group went down the drain.

Mate of mine has/had one too. Same problems as above, engine came out, defuser was a pain to find due to the rarity of them etc. Engine was fubar and replaced (another rare part for the auto) etc.

I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. Renault have an awful reputation at the moment and having had 4 old Renaults I think I can safely tell you not to bother.

Go find a Nissan or Mazda. Might not be the most comfortable or tooled up car in the world but they're highly reliable.
