Laptop starting up by itself

This last week ive noticed my laptop as been on the password screen on the morning but I thought maybe id restarted instead of shut down. Last night I made sure it was shut down correctly yet this morning when im sitting right next to it it has started up by itself. The lid was closed so the button hasnt been pressed accidently either.
Im not sure if its even possible to have it set up so it starts up by itself and this may have been done somehow although I know noone here has set it up purposely to do that.
Can anyone shed an light on this please.

Sounds like something is waking it up, are you putting it to sleep / hibernation or are you shutting down.
Try this, this will tell you what woke it up last time. (Assumes you have win 7 but should work from other versions from the run command on your start menu)

Thank you. Ive done that and it says the following
Wake History Count - 0
Im defiitely shutting it down properly though and not just putting it to sleep.0 -
My laptops re-starts itself up all the time, it also flipps the disk out sometimes middle of the night! I tried looking into it and no-one knows what it is,so I was advised to let it run out of battery so it will def not re-start itself.I don't see how that helps?surely that might cause other problems..Anyway.
I will be taking mine in to somone to have a look next week, if I find out anything useful I'll def let you know. We’re separate, two ghosts in one mirror, no nearer
Later on if it turns to chaos
Hurricane coming all around us
See the crack, pull it back from the window, you stay low..<3

Carolwat - Have a look inn the BIOS settings to see if any of the "wake" options have times in them.
It could be something as simple as that.
Georgia-Pa - I'd try the same with yours. The only thing I can think of for the disk (I assume you mean the cd-tray) is a faulty switch.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
You could have "Wake On LAN" enabled on your wireless or ethernet adapter.
To check that you need to go into the properties for the adapter from the Device Manager.
You can run this in Windows 7 by clicking the Start button and typing devmgmt.msc into the text box at the bottom of the menu and pressing the Enter key.
If you want more specific instructions, tell us what version of Windows you are running and how far you are able to get with the device manager settings.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Do you have a wireless mouse?
They're well know for waking up laptops while their lids are closed.0 -
It not restarting its actually starting up after being off overnight. Im running Vista if that helps. Its been fine and ive not changed any settings although it did lock up last week whilst using firefox and I had to switch it off with the button and when I started it back up firefox would work at all. I did this a couple of times and nothing so I reinstalled firefox and left it off overnight then it was fine.0

If it's an HP there's a diagnostic prog which can check various things. On bootup press esc and you'll get options.
Of course it could be something else. You may have to call in The Exorcist.0 -
Its not HP. Its an e-system. I did wonder if it was brother pete from down the cellar lol0

Try running sfc to see if there's any system files corrupted http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9298330
