Renewables: "talking 'bout my generation"

  • Well I just managed to stumble across the PVGIS by exactly 1kwh with a total of 26.57 O's this month which was slightly better than my first January last year which was 23.25 O's.

But the month has been shocking with all the fog.

I hit the daily target on 12 days of which 7 were at least double the daily target which appears to have got me to the line

You shouldn't write off Ecotricity completely just because their offer to me was not worthwhile. Electricity prices vary all over the country and there may well be somewhere where Ecotricity are competitive. You really ought to get a quote from them and then a few more for comparison purposes. (But don't pin your hopes on them being your best deal :D )
I did my sums yesterday and with the long distance driving I know I will be doing Ecotricity would just about break even with the best I could find. If I do just one unexpected long journey, which is highly likely with visiting the grandchildren, they'll be the winner. Ecotricity it shall be.

As an aside, I will be test driving a 30kWh Nissan Leaf for a couple of days in April and tried to download the Ecotricity charging app. It requires a vehicle number so I e-mailed them about this yesterday evening. Just had a reply that the app does not check DVLA for the number entered, therefore I can enter that of my current fossil burner and change it when I buy an EV later in the year.

Was looking good for 100%, but then got 1.5kWh's for the last 3 days of Jan, that's total, not each day. Just rain and grey.

Finished on 90.5kWh and 91% of target. Looking at my 5 years with all systems, I have 4 years ranging from just 87kWh to 91kWh and 2013 at 114kWhs.

Good news though, import down to 178kWh which is my lowest Jan so far.

Is that all from a nearly 6kw system?

Hiya. Yep, Jan target is just 99kWh! :(

E/W knocks generation down by about 20%, otherwise Cardiff is pretty good at around 1,000kWh/kWp for south facing.

The problem though is that, that 20% is not spread evenly. The summer reduction is quite small, whilst the winter reduction is huge:

30d pitch south facing "my house" per kWp
    Total - 968kWh
    June - 124kWh
    Jan - 31kWh

    E, or W or E/W (% v's south)
    Total - 786kWh (81.2%)
    June - 117kWh (94.4%)
    Jan - 16.5kWh (53.2%)

In a perfect world we'd all have 50d pitch south facing rooves, with maybe a slight west bias. Wifey said no to 2kWp of SSW at 50d in the garden. Wifey is the sensible one in our household!

[Edit: Just to add, we've also made a number of small investments through Abundance for wind, solar and AD, so that makes up for our low winter gen. Whilst those investments were mainly driven by the G & E of this board, they also have decent returns linking back to the MSE of the site. So there are are many ways to 'play' with RE. M.]
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

Achieved 98.6% of PVGIS estimate for January. Like others, awful last few days.
Roll on 7th Feb when, hopefully the sun starts peeping over the mountain behind us again.

2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).
