Renewables: "talking 'bout my generation"

What are O's?
Hiya Nigel, it's just your generation divided by your panel output. It's actually a nickname Oscars named after Oscar on here, but actually relates to the industry standard of kWh/kWp, but O's is shorter!
It's particularly handy as an end of month or end of year reference. For my E/W system I might edge towards 800 O's pa, whilst a decent south facing system may hit 1,000, or even 1,100 O's.
You can also compare to other parts of the world, perhaps Spain 1,500 O's, Australia 1,500-1,800 O's etc.
On here it reduces confusion, for instance the holy grail of a 4kWp system might be 30kWh's in a day, at around 7.5 O's. So if I post 34kWh's (using brawn over brain from my 5.58kWp) it would look quite good in comparison, whereas in reality I 'only' got 6 O's.
BTW welcome.
[Edit: Some of us also chase/track our generation against PVGIS targets. I was looking good for January, but 3 days of rain will probably now mean I drop just short. There's a walkthrough for PVGIS in sec 5 of the PV FAQs. M.]Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

You'd really need to compare the cost of buying electricity from Ecotricity with that of using another supplier. In my case that would have been several hundred pounds extra each year for using them !
As you say, you'd only get 52 'free' charges. If you were confident of using all 52 you could perhaps justify paying £300 more to Ecotricity than to any other supplier. If not, then I have calculated that paying £6 every 60 miles or so is actually dearer than using my diesel car for long trips. Perhaps more economical if you get a car with a larger battery than mine of course. The mind of the bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract.
