I have been reading in the news about how pumps at stations will switch off if your car has no insurance. What will people on temporary cover do?

In some cases it takes a week for MID to update, so you could be twiddling your thumbs for a while.

Got to Tesco. In the unlikely event you have a problem, tell them you've just insured the vehicle and MID hasn't updated yet. If they can actually do this, which I doubt, I'm sure you're not the first person in the same boat.

AFAIK, all the cameras do is record the registration number in case of "bilking."

The police will take the car if it is not on MIB regardless of what documents you have, they regard them as forgeries.

Thanks for your posts. Goodness, a week is way too long.

I did wonder about if the police accepted documents as you could insure yourself and then cancel but keep the docs.

    Thanks for your help guys!

The police will check with the insurer if you produce docs that don't match what's on MID. I am yet to see any insurer with a 100% adherence to the update timescales of the MID (though most issues revolve around back dated cancellations)

My insurance renews on 16 June. Last year we were heading off to Cornwall on 18th. I took out new cover on 11th (with C/D of 16th) and expected MID to have been updated. On 17th, I checked MID and the vehicle was shown as uninsured.

I phoned the insurer and they told me it can take up to a week for the system to update. I asked why so long, when I'd actually purchased the cover five days earlier and they couldn't provide an explanation.

They told me to take my new documentation with me and to ask any Policeman stopping me to ring them for confirmation of cover.

The car is nearly out of petrol and I really would like to go and get my shopping and fill it up. But I am sure my local Tesco station has the cameras pointing at all cars when they come in.

Nothing to do with insurance, they're just recording your reg so they can track you down if you do a drive-off. Don't worry.

It may be dependant on where you live, however in West Yorkshire, they will call nobody, if you car is not on MID it will go on the back of a recovery truck and you can argue it out with the recovery garage.
UNLESS you are in possession of these documents at Roadside :
A full Birth certificate and at least one form of Photographic ID such as a driving licence or passport.
A document or reference to from your insurance stating policy number and time and date of commencement .
They will only accept ALL of the 3 and then will deal with by way of producer.
If you dont have all 3, away it goes.
They do have severe issues up here with identity problems so Things may be different in areas with Less insurance fraud.
