There is absolutely no way any combi uses 3.5kw a day in standby, more like in a year!
Otherwise quite interesting, now try the same for a car!0 -
And....Jeff from the Daily Telegraph recommends leaving the gas central heating on 24/7, heating all rooms including unused rooms, not timing the water and leaving the TRV's fully open. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertyadvice/jeffhowell/8214378/Home-improvements-how-to-heat-the-house-this-winter.html
Compared to that advice electric heating is vastly cheaper.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I've recently been given an 'electric smart meter' (connects to main electric supply to give real time electric usage in house).
I couldn't understand why we seemed to have a high constant electric use even when nothing much electric seemed to be switched on! I went round the house switching things on and off and checking the smart meter to eventually find that my Gas combi boiler which needs electric to run digital display is using 150 watts per hour. That’s without any heating on or hot water being drawn, no pumps or fans, JUST DIGITAL DISPLAY. I pay 10p per kWh, so am spending 36 pence per day.
3.6 kWh per day. That's a whopping £131.40 per year just to have my Gas combi boiler switched on, even if I don't use the heating or turn on the hot tap!!!
as for the car thing... (shrug shoulders)“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

digital display shouldnt need that amount of power just to run, i have a wireless control panel to set the temps on my combi boiler, which uses 2 AA batteries which get replaced once a year. nothing digital on the boiler itself, but i have noticed that my electric bill never seems to go down. maybe its to do with the receiver in the boiler.
As we live in a council house we dont have to worry about cover on the boiler, we just phone up and they send someone out to repair it.0 -

Then he has a clear boiler fault, transformer maybe?. LCD display approx. 1 - 3w.
Seriously keep your old thing, it's fine.0 -
Why would you need to take out insurance on a brand new combi that has (if you pick wisely) got a 5 year warranty on it?
At £10pm that would be £600 down the drain. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Of course you could always consider electric radiators:
5 x 2kw electric rads with timers 2000.00
5 x electrical sockets and heating ring main fitted plus hanging rads 1000.00
5 x timers running on standby 50.00 p.a
Lets give them a 10 year lifespan
305.00 p.a to sit and do nothing and when they are running over £1 an hour.0 -

What a load of nonsense this is!0
