Car Gearbox Trouble?

Firstly, I'm new to the forum on this site, but an avid user of the rest of it since i successfully claimed my bank charges a couple years ago.

Ok, so let me explain, it all started;
a couple year ago same problem as stated below
August Changed clutch
november when she heard a noise from the gearbox,
December she took it to the dealership where they changed it (free - warranty).
last week noise from gearbox returned, clutch slipping again
yesterday she took it to different garage as the car ran out of warranty the week after the gearbox was changed and they said the main bearing was at fault, leaking oil onto a drive shaft the in turn is coating the clutch making that ineffective.

That is a condensed version of what has happened with her suzuki swift, (never buy one!). What i am asking is the work that the dealership did under warranty still covered even though the warranty of the car ran out in december? maybe a years warranty on the work? ...they said the parts are but labour is not and she would have to pay? is this correct????

So she's had this car a couple of years and it's been continually playing up?

Flog it and get something more reliable would be my advice :cool:

Dealership failed to correctly repair an oil leak, they fixed the symptom, but failed to fix the cause.

What else is wrong with the car?

Flog a faulty car and buy somebody else's faulty car? No wonder it's so hard to get a decent motor these days.....

Little Suzukis are still pretty reliable and the timeline of this story doesn't particularly point at a garage fault. An apprentice or improver would have noticed a leak from the main seal and as it took months for another transmission problem to occur, it's just bad luck. The oil leak causing the new clutch to fail however wont be covered, neither will the replacement of the clutch itself, so get an independent quote for the whole job.

No, you missed my point

The chances of buying somebody else's faulty car are astronomical, because everybody seems to sell their car when something goes wrong or something expensive needs doing.... As per your suggestion.

Can't notice an oil leak if there's no oil to leak out.

The car is now in the dealership awaiting their opinion. They said they need to drop the gearbox to examine further (calling back on tuesday)

Independent quotes for third gearbox and another new clutch on her 58 reg car are approx £700-£800.

I am not a mechanic but an aircraft engineer and personally serviced the vehicle ensuring all levels were satisfactory. I doubt very much if she sold the car she would cover the costs of her finance so thats not really an option.

Thanks to all who had offered there advice so far, ill update you on tuesday when they call back.

Just to finalise this topic incase anyone was interested, we took it to the dealership at 0900, up on the ramp at 1330. Received a phone call at 1500 stating "as a good will gesture" the will fix the input shaft, gearbox etc. but suggested we change the clutch as its worn. We reminded him that the porous (now oil covered) clutch plate is only 3-4 months old and suggest the find another remedy as clutches normally last longer.

They said they'd burn the covering oils off to which we replied that we would be monitoring the clutch plate very close for any sort of fatigue. Any problems with the clutch, we will be straight in touch!!!

I just had to check my calender to confirm it's the 21st century. The idea of putting a clutch on the bonfire to "clean up" a wet friction plate went out when I was a boy. It was a bodge for poor students to keep their motors limping on and has no place in a serious garages repair. Labour charges are too high for them to contemplate sticking the old plate in, they clearly have a very thrifty service manager trying to save a few pounds like that.
