It depends when you go in.. if they are busy they aren't impressed, if you go in when it is relatively empty it is fine.. my mother takes £500+ in change every Friday at about 11am... (Lloydstsb) .. She spoke to one of the cashiers about when they were quietest and she advised that was the best time to go to our local branch..

finally put the money in the bank. maybe i should have taken a wheelbarrow-it was heavy. Lloyds was just going to exchange it for notes without asking!

A footnote: My greengrocer will take (grab) bags of small change as he is often short and I believe has to pay for it at the bank. I usually recyle £5 or £10 for greengroceries!

I smiled and said right, i'll take the (six figure number )in cash, small notes is fine......where are the paying in slips please?

Pitty sure there is a limit on the amount of cash one can take out over the counter too. Would they really count out a six figure sum of cash and hand it over to you just like that?

Lloyds will take any amount of coin - just be sensible about it - ask when the best time is to take it in - I would suggest Wednesday will be a very bad day after the long bank holiday weekend and lunchtime would be a no no if you have a lot of coin to be weighed and counted.

Of course you COULD always give them a 'courtesy call' prior to taking in your correctly bagged ;) coins and then they might be happy to take them all!

Banks are, in my experience, slightly better than building societies because people (ie businesses) go to the banks to get change.

I used to work at the Bingo and we used LOADS of £1 coins - on booksales it was 'policy' to give change as coins (because of the machines/table bingo) and we used to get £1 coins that had been paid into PO in Sheffield. We would get bags with screws in - weighed correctly but with £18 cash in - I used to check all my bags on booksales and had LOADS of fake £1 coins- I got to be a dab hand at spotting fakes - and there was Jeremy Vine saying he couldn't understand how faking £1 coins works! It works because people cannot spot them as readily - shops DO NOT routinely check for fake coins like they check for fake notes.

You raise a interesting point about fake pound coins, that would obviously be picked up in the banks weighing process. A fake coin bagged up will throw the whole bag out does that then mean the cashier has to go through each coin to identify the fake?

well since we had 'other items' in the bag the weight of the bag was consistent with it containing 20 £1 coins...
