HI all

We are off to Haven Primrose Valley for a week at Easter (2 Break Free holidays booked next to each other:j )

and so will be using it as a base to explore the area.

Kids are aged 6 and 8 .....

we have English Heritage membership so will be going up to Whitby Abbey...

We will also head over to North Yorkshire steam train in Goathland..

but any other suggestions for good places to see, good "Local food" spots to eat in, and any other highlights of the area.

I have found a thread on Whitby ....https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3443893

and one on Scarborough
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3370206

which i will be taking notes from ..

but other suggestions for whitby, Scarborough and other places around most welcome..

thanks

  • Hello,

We own a holiday home in Filey, these are some things i recommend, take a day trip to York, visit Flamborough Head, Visit Scarborough, Have a meal in Filey (Very Nice Italian Along the Highstreet) If you like Chinese aswell, their is a cheap Chinese takeaway, Last time i went (Two weeks ago) a Meal Including Chips was £3.50, also if you can book to go on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway it is a wonderful day, I say not to go to Flamingo Land, it is very run down last time i went, and we got bored within a hour of being there, as it is very over priced aswell.

If you need any more info don't forget to PM me :)

Flamingo Land is a very good day out , its not run down at all they have spent loads of money , nothing like it was years ago, we spend all day there when going, excellent day out, we have a 5yr and 8yr there is rides for all ages (including some of the best coasters) and gentle rides for the youngsters, and the zoo to look around

There is a Morrisons not too far away about 8 miles, so if you want a cheap tea, kids eat free in the evenings Mon-Fri and 2 adult meals and drinks for £6 and you get 2 kids meals free :)

There is also a Crown Carvery at Scarborough, £3.69 for a carvery

can anyone recommend the best bits of beach to explore down that stretch of coast..

which is the best stretch for kids to explore, any rock pools or interesting features? and dangerous bits to avoid?

also what is the nearest supermarket to the Primrose Valley site?

There's a new Tesco in Filey that's close to Primrose Valley.

I agree that Flamingo Land is well worth a visit. We live near Scarborough and go to FL every year, and see a difference each time because they've really been spending the money. There's a very good range of rides so something for everyone and the zoo is nice for a walk round after lunch. Take a packed lunch to avoid the overpriced cafe's, as you can get a pass out to your car.

Playdale Farm is only a few miles from PV, and will suit the age of your children. It has a big indoor play barn, 2 outdoor playgrounds and a hay bale barn to go with all the animals, who you can feed.

There's a beach between Scarborough and Filey called Cayton Bay which is lovely. It doesn't have shops and arcades but a big stretch of sheltered sand that is very safe, and as you walk down a hill, there's no cars to worry about either. It has a small beach hut selling ice creams, toys etc, and toilets. And it has great rock pools when the tide is out.

As you have English Heritage membership, visit Scarborough Castle. It's bigger up there than it looks from the beach!

There's a nice pub in a village called Flixton near Scarborough called the Foxhounds that does wonderful food, and lots of it. the menu has a lot of choice and plenty for the children too. Good value too.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi

If you want a beach without the bright lights and amusements we love Hunmanby Gap. There is a little cafe and toilets and miles of safe sandy beach.

If you go into Filey I recommend parking on the council run park at Filey Brigg. Lots of open space, a nice play area and cafe as well as toilets and beach access. You can walk into Filey along the beach or through the town if the tide is in.

We were at Flamingoland last year and I was amazed at how much they have smartened it up. It is a lot of money though and discount vouchers can be hard to find.

Dalby Forest is a must for 6 and 8 year olds. Dont be put off by the £7 entrance fee, its a whole day out. Take a picnic, wellies and spare clothes for paddling in the river.

If you go into Scarborough think about using the park and ride. Get off in the town, mooch around the pound shops or do the castle then walk down onto the front and get the bus back from there.

The Denison Arms at East Ayton is well known for its pub grub. Excellent value too.

A bit further away is Sewerby Hall and Gardens, one of our favourite places for a day out and cheap too. You can get a little land train into Bridlington.

Have a great time and I hope the weather is kind to you!
