Walk up the 199(?) steps to Whitby Abbey (English Heritage).
Walk along the mini piers with the lighthouses on them.
Walk up to the Captain Cook monument and the Whale jaw bones.
Window shop in the numerous independent shops.
Eat lunch at the Magpie Cafe (or have a cheap take away if the weather is nice).
Go hunting for fossils at Boggle Hole.
Ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The man without a signature.0 -
Been a while so not sure if still around, you must have fish and chips in the magpie cafe, always was a queue even in the p1ssing rain (normal summer weather for North Yorks).
You've also got the Abbey at the top of 187 million steps, captain cook museum, tacky dracula museum, whale jaw arch on the other side of the valley from the Abbey, gypsy Rosa Lee doing palm readings next to the fish market and lots more I've forgotten about.
One of my favourite places to visit is Robin Hoods Bay a few miles south, some great childhood memories there.0 -
Whitby is a lovely place. I personally wouldn't bother with the Magpie as there are loads of other great palces to eat and it always seems overrated. Definitley walk upto the Church and Abbey there are great views from up there. If you carry on past the steps up you walk by the Kipper house (smells nice!) and down to the sea. The old town is nice for ambling - not very big but quaint cobble streets! On the other side you've got the Whale bones and promenade on the cliff along with a mini golf thing and the leisure centre if its raining! You can walk to Sandside along the beach path which is nice.0

The railway is the best thing. Heartbeat country. Visit Boogle Hole & Robin Hood's bay.
Whitby to me has always felt a bit eerie. Did some evening classes there many years ago from Scarborough. Desolation & Empty in Mid winter. Suppose its better than riots, a lot better - just feels strange.

The Magpie is hugely over-rated in my opinion. Definitely Whitby's biggest tourist trap.
I've always found Gravely's to be much better.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
We went on the train from Pickering up to Goathland then we walked over the Moors to Grosmont and caught the train back which was a really nice trip. Goathland is a nice little place for a wander.0

I'd avoid the Magpie too. I've been to Quayside -http://www.fuscowhitby.com/QS_AboutUs_01.html which is much better, not as busy, and the crinkle-cut chips are lovely. Proper tea in metal teapots too.0
