The steam service from Whitby to Grosmont is limited as it's Network Rail track and they limit access. You can get a national rail service from Whitby to Grosmont which ties into the steam service to Goathland.

NYMR website has all the details.
  • Have to disagree about Magpie's - love the place. Quayside is good but not as good as Magpies and also the seafood is amazing. Good tip is that Magpies actually take bookings from tea time onwards, so book in plenty of time and you can miss the queue!!
  • The museum in Pannet Park is brill, take a ride on the Steam Bus, visit the paddling pool on West Cliff, go out on the Esk Belle II and watch the Whales and porpoises find fossils at Saltwick Bay.

Elizabeth the steam bus is becoming a bit of a legend - brilliant trip and a great commentary.

Some great pubs in Whitby, many of which have Hot Mulled Wine on tap.

There are a few activity pastimes around Whitby. Mountain biking tracks in the North York Moors.
There are some very old stone markers around Whitby that mark the psychic ley lines that converge in Whitby.
For walkers you have the coast to coast walk (Lake District to Robin Hoods bay).
There are some nice walks in Dalby forest. Lots of nature in the forest including Kingfishers. I very much doubt that you will encounter any big cats after the last two bad winters. I had a friend who many years ago stumbled upon a black panther by accident in the forest. Thats what happens when you are a quiet walker you see the lot!!
    :T
If you do go in the forest you can always insist that your mother in law goes first or just wear some scent.

If you have children, crabbing, only a pound for bait and an another for the hook. My 15 year old daughter spent all day at the harbour!:p:p
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more
