Buying a private reg advice please

Im looking for a private reg for a birthday present,,nothing expensive just a cheap one,,ive noticed the dvla transfer fee that i have to buy, does anyone know a site where i dont have to buy this now,as the plate might not be going on the car for 3-4 months time,,so would prefer to pay it when Im going to put it on,if that makes sense.

just to add,i had found a plate on national numbers,,but it has the fee when you go to checkout.

If the number is a new, unissued one you haven't got much choice as the dealer is just acting as an agent for the DVLA. Have you looked on the DVLA web page? The number might be cheaper from them.

You'll still have to pay the transfer fee though.

Yes just seen it the dvla page and indeed it is cheaper than that site.,,ive been looking through the questions/answers on the dvla site.

Am i right here,,I can buy the plate and i will own it but can nominee my other half to use it on her car,,i did want her to own the plate but I think she would have to buy it,,then its no supprise.

Cant find out how long ive got to regester it on a car once ive bought it.

sorted you get 12 months to transfer the plate over,and if I buy the plate,put her as the nominee,once its on her car she affectivly owns the plate and it left with her to change it over to a new car in the future.

You can nominate 2 other drivers who can use the plate (obviously only one can use it at any one time) If you don't have a car to put it on, or while changing cars, the plate can be held on retention.
There is no way to avoid the transfer fee each time you change cars.

No i wasnt trying to avoid it as i know its got to be paid,i was just wanted to buy the plate now without it,,plate only,,and pay the transfer fee seperate when the time comes to putting it onto a car.

Its ok now as on the dvla site the price is inclusive of VAT and fee,,it was the other sites everytime i seen a plate then clicked to buy it ended up adding alsorts on to the price.

I emailed natinal numbers who said if i see a plate on any site they will beat the price garanteed.

Can't you buy the number on a retention certificate which gives you 12 months before it needs putting on a car? This time can also be extended.

IIRC if you don't 'own' the plate already, you can't put it on retention.

New-reg say they are cheaper than DVLA - one I just looked at was £250 instead of £255.

DVLA price includes the £80 assignment fee. Newreg price does not.

You can buy the plate from DVLA on a retention certificate as well as buying one ready to put on a vehicle. They advertise them as ideal for Birthday Gifts, etc.

From the DVLA website:

If you are still not ready to put your registration mark onto your vehicle before the expiry date printed on your Certificate of Entitlement, then you can extend the entitlement period for one year, online via 'My Account' for a fee of £25. You will have the option to do this for 28 days before the expiry of the certificate.
