Why don't people bother to call up the bank and vendor before posting here? How is anyone here supposed to know - first do the most basic and obvious legwork yourself and then post here if you've exhausted everything.

I rented a car for 5 days from National Car in July and when I returned it was informed that everything was fine. A month later I found the following entry on my credit card statement: 'EC VEHICLERENTAL LEICESTER HQ 55.97'. I received no notification that this charge was to be levied, let alone an explanation as to why.

Eventually, after writing several times, I was informed that this was the excess waiver charge (i.e. the total for 5 days) and not the ‘£11.66’ rate which I was told about in the shop. That rate only referred to the charge per day.

I asked them for the rental agreement which eventually they sent to me.

Their rental agreement shows the basic rental charge as a total sum, while the damage waiver is given as a day rate. This leaves the customer to work out that he will ultimately be paying £55.97 for the damage waiver. This is at best confusing and at worst deliberately misleading.

I explained that the agreement is (perhaps deliberately) confusing and insist they reimburse me. They did.

If anyone is in a similar situation I’d suggest bypassing their contact form (they never reply) and repeatedly emailing their customer service team directly at:
