Shoe polish

My grandad when he taught me swore blind it was better because the polish is absorbed a little in to the top layer of leather and creates a more waterproof layer.
I don't know about that but I still polish them the same way. Only once a week though, never daily otherwise I remember my gran who always tutted and complained about wasting polish (she was terrible for complaining about waste - too much so)
Same here Alison, strangely enough i enjoyed it. My dad is 80 and he still has the same wee brush set from his youth. Still cleaning his shoes too, even though they mostly live in a bag under his bed.0 -
I was at 4 Armoured Brigade, Muenster at that time and do you know I can't remember the price of anything! Of course it was cheaper in camp but I don't even remember German prices being that high although I do remember that LOA was about 8 marks a day - am I right?
Aye,round about that.I remember that while beer was cheap in the NAAFI,spirits were bloody expensive outside the wire..I didn't smoke & the bloke in the next room to me did but didn't drink spirits,so I got his whisky ration & he got my fag ration...:D0 -
Kiwi Parade Gloss all the way!:rotfl:
Cherry Blossom contains too much wax & is harder to work with (as I was told by my DI,Sgt Davies, at RAF Swinderby in 1984...)
Saying that,we used a coating on Tornado GR1 Weapon Pylons called Flexane. You painted it onto the leading edges of the pylons & it dried to a thick, shiny hard skin...Because it was shiny, the scuffers (RAF Police) & other shiny bums (admin clarks) used to PAY us to coat their toecaps with the stuff....So on any day,the was usually a few pairs of shoes drying in the squadron role bay...20DM a pair (about £6) into the squadron beer fund thank you very much!!:T
Kiwi Parade Gloss, never heard of it before, so i had to check Amazon, going to have to order some for my dads shoes, it is quite expensive, right enough. Will do a compare test against OH shoes.0 -

Whiskey was off the ration for us - officers only. Off camp we drank klar korn which worked out cheap enough, especially if you were lucky at "shock aus" which (strangely) I was. Of course there was always the umbiquitous beermat if you ran out of cash. The girl in our pub had a shoebox full of them.0 -
I agree nothing like the proper way, but OH is such a big kid, he is sure to find the biggest muckiest hole to play in, so the quick way will just have to do him. If i spent all that time and hard work and he got his shoes mucky i might just have to strangle him.
And that's your only reason for wanting to strangle him...?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Far easier to use than Cherry B as Spike says. I only ever saw one guy use CB and he came crying to us because it wouldn't shine. Far too much paraffin to shine. We had to clean it all off and do his boots with Kiwi. He was REME of course.
Of course I had Wellington and George boots to bull as well and they were a nightmare. No toecap divider either which was a nuisance and the minute you put them on there was polish flaking everywhere. Far too flexible a boot for bulling and they wouldn't have stood a good beeswaxing.0 -
About 3.19DM to the pound...Beer in the NAAFI was 1DM,but that was RAF Bruggen in the 80's...:D
In my day, at sea...
Export standard lager 23p
Shorts 3p per tot.
We used to make it 25p for the beer and 5p for the tots. the extra loot went into a fund so that we could party when dockside. Esp with visitors on board.
After a six month "holiday cruise" I automatically did my usual which was to order a pint and a treble... expecting a 40p bill...

OOPS!
I can remember that in Warminster, scrumpy was 26p a pint. I think beer was 35p a pint, so BAOR was at least half of that because I couldn't believe my luck. Fags dirt cheap as well even if they were rationed to 200 a week to stop us selling them on the black market.0 -

I remember when I started drinking when I joined up in 84,you could get drunk on a fiver! Beer was around 45p a pint at home...Saying that,I always kept a couple crates of Dorty ot a Herfy Handbag under my bed in the block..AND you got cash back on the crate & empties!!..How MSE is that!:T (Think it was 1DM for the crate & 30Pfg per bottle,so you got back a third of the cost of a full crate..)
Worst drinking memory was eating a pickled egg in a glass of creme de menth...I have not ate a pickled egg since & that was in 85!0 -
