I remember when I started drinking when I joined up in 84,you could get drunk on a fiver! Beer was around 45p a pint at home...Saying that,I always kept a couple crates of Dorty ot a Herfy Handbag under my bed in the block..AND you got cash back on the crate & empties!!..How MSE is that!:T (Think it was 1DM for the crate & 30Pfg per bottle,so you got back a third of the cost of a full crate..)
Worst drinking memory was eating a pickled egg in a glass of creme de menth...I have not ate a pickled egg since & that was in 85!

Might have been able to get drunk on a fiver but in the UK I never went out without less than £50 in my pocket because we were such a sociable unit, and of course one needs to eat at the end of the night. The first Indian retaurant had just opened in Warminster in about 1980. Different in BAOR, about 100DM was good for a night out civvy side and that included a wee visit to the Schnell Imbiss on the way home. On a good evening at Shock Aus the imbiss money was all that was spent!
