Guys do me a favour please. Stop ranting on about Firefox etc being better than IE8. I've come here to ask advice about tweaking IE8, not to give you a platform for something else. I'll find the right tweak eventually but I just thought that perhaps someone who is more technically minded than me might already have it. If you don't please jog on. It's not very MSE to start slagging someone off when they're asking for advice.

I haven't ranted at all - some will call it crapware. IE isn't too horrible (in fact, version 9 has made a few improvements), but it always seems behind the times compared to every other browser in existence. Unless it's the only browser that can load a specific webapp, it's not worth your time. Use IE to download a more extensible, feature-filled browser and forget about it. Superior alternative are Google Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

Are you using your ISP's DNS? If it's running slow you'll get delays every time your browser needs to resolve a domain name.

Have you tried an alternative such as OpenDNS to see if that helps?

Let's not fall out about this. I'm seriously asking for advice about IE8. I can't go to IE9 because I only have XP Pro and afaik 9 is only for Vista and above - or am I wrong?

I've had this before and it may well be that the right thing to do is install and re-install and if I don't get any tips then that's probably what I'll do - or else just suffer the dragging. I've got Firefox installed as well but I don't use it.

Now I'm out of my depth.

Follow the seven steps here to try using an alternative DNS. You can always change it back if you there is no improvement.

    Who is your ISP?
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:

    You are correct

You can't uninstall IE as it's an integral part of windows, but you can repair or reinstall it.
I've got Firefox installed as well but I don't use it.
How about trying Firefox to see if it "drags" the same as IE. If so then you can eliminate your installation of IE as the culprit and start looking down the DNS route and so on.

"commit charge+physical ram total from task manager"

    I haven't a clue what that means?
