UK employment: Firms 'report optimism over jobs'

The UK's labour market may be "turning the corner", with more firms looking to hire staff than let people go, a survey of more than 2,000 firms suggests.

Recruitment firm Manpower said its research indicated businesses were encouraged by signs of economic growth.

Yet more solid evidence that we are growing our way to success!!

Unfortunately 1,000 coffee shops taking on a part time minimum wage employee do not offset the loss by 1,700 redundancies

Lots of lay offs in the last 2 weeks in the construction industry around here, usually happens around this time of year, hell of a lot more than usual this time though.

Only hearing rumours so far as to which of the firms have won the big contracts for the new tax year.

Usually doing site set ups by now for next years work but nothings happening yet.

Maybe. Maybe England will win the next world cup. Plus this a research from a recruitment firm.... a vested interest.

Recruitment Firms only get paid if Companies are hiring .... why would they say that Companies were, if they are not?

Jimmy, Jimmy....we KNOW it's grim round your way. No need to remind us.

But Mr. Ree was painting a UK-wide picture, which looks amazingly positive. :T

Thanks for the heads up, Mr. Ree!

    Are you for real?
  • Are you for real?

    You talking to me?
    Yes I'm real.
As real as the optimism displayed by the 2000 firms polled by Manpower.

Quite obvious but I'll spell it out for you...

    1. They want to hire people.
    2. Its all priceless PR for them all over the media.
    3. They want the publicity that their 'survey' creates so that if firms are really 'thinking about hiring someone' rather than laying someone off they hope some of them will use Manpower. Hell, we are even talking about them on an internet forum!

Have you been blind to all the vested interest media these days? They are hardly going to to say, "Our survey suggests 50% of firms are thinking of laying off staff so we expect the labout market to continue to be weak, going forward". Even though thats the reality from the other viewpoint.

The economy is still weak, growth is weak. Everyone is cutting back as inflation ravages everyones disposable income (if they have any left) Lots of jobs still being cut all over the place unfortunately in the real world. Stop coming on here on some kind of happy pills pretending everything is rosy just to ramp up your overpriced shoe box(s) in SE England.
