Can i watch TV on Sky box with no landline

Options
Hello,

I recently bought a new Freesat Box and i got it working (Installed Dish, cabling from Dish to Freesat Box etc) and then unfortunately, the HD channels on Freesat box started giving me some problem and i had to return it back. (their was some problem with Box)

Now my query is, one of my friend has spare sky box. Can i use his Sky box same as Freesat box to receive some channels? (he said he doesnt have sky card), Do i need to buy sky crd too?

Just to add, i dont have any Landline at my place and neither do i have internet as i use my mobile for internet.

Hope someone will be able to help.

Kind Regards
Jay

Just connect it up and it will work, as you are not a subscriber to Sky you don't need a land line connected to it. You won't be able to use the record function if its a Sky + box.

To get the full range of freesat from Sky channels you do need a card, costs around £25 ish. However you'll be able to get the basic free to air channels without one.

You don't need a landline even as a subscriber. You can buy out that requirement at sign up for a flat fee of about £25.

When you say 'full range of Freesat', do you mean Freesat channels only or all the Free channels which comes on sky box if subscribed to sky.

    Thanks:beer:

Some channels like the BBC are Free to air and unencrypted, other channels are free to view but are encrypted, IIRC More 4 may be one, for the later you need a card.

Google Freesat from Sky for the full range.

You can't get any Freesat channels on a Sky box. You get the Freesat From Sky channels, which require no Sky sub whatsoever. Using the Sky viewing card will give you the few extra ones that are encrypted but FTA.
Freesat is a different platform, requring a Freesat box (though the same dish and alignment).

OK, now i have a sky box without sky card and it shows me all the freeview channels and for some channels it ask me to Insert my Sky viewing card. If i buy sky card, will those channels start working or i need a sky subscription for them?

As i used to have freeview at my place (i had a cheap antenna and wire from it goes to my TV), and its quite clear(clearity wise) but with sky box. the clearity has down a bit, is it due to not having sky card or thats how sky works.

    Cheers

It does NOT show you all the Freeview channels - what you have is the FTA (free to air) FreesatFromSky channels. Freeview is the terrestrial digital TV platform via an aerial. Freeview, freesat and FreesatFromSky (FSFS) all have different channel line-ups some channels on Freeview are subscription only on satellite and others are FTV (free to view) requiring a FSFS viewing card in a Sky digibox. At present there are six FTV channels - Channel 5HD, Pick TV, Pick TV+1, Viva, LFC TV and Motors TV {plus some regions of ITV1 and ITV 1+1). Lack of or prescence of a viewing card has absolutely no effect on picture quality - that may be down to how the digibox is connected to your TV and the settings in both the Sky box and TV menus.

Considering the channels on freesat and FreesatFromSky in virtually all cases are exactly the same broadcasts you DO GET all but one of the freesat channels on a Sky box (plus over a hundred more free channels that are not on the freesat EPG) - what you don't get on a Sky box are the freesat EPG (you get the Sky EPG) and the freesat interactive services (you do however get an often different set of interactive red button services0.

I'm aware that channel line up is similar, however Freesat and !!!!!! are different platforms. There is continual confusion over this (usually adding Freeview into the mix as well, which many people believe is available via a Sky box), so I make no apologies for pointing it out.
