I am having a lot of problems with my Virgin download speed at present it is 2.4mb tonight (I pay for 10mbs which is top speed available round here) but checking on the service status says all OK. So when I was online checking status, site suggested trying Home Help Hub to trouble shoot - where I could chat online.
I selected chat option, was given seventh degree by online help about my account and then asked to explain my problem. I said why has my line speed dropped tonight? In return got a long paragraph offering me online digital support in form of security sotware, online backup and direct access to my PC by a tech to trouble shoot etc. for 10 pds month Said he could add it to my bill there and then (we pay by DD).
I said what are you talking about, I just want to find out what is wrong with my line tonight. I already have the rest covered (which I do). In response I got another email offering it for 6pds. I logged out at that stage, not without difficulty.
It is definitely the Virgin site I was on, I am sure about that and I did not provide account number or branch or anything like that. But clearly it is all a sell on scam.

i wish i downloaded at 1mb never mind 2.4.0 -
We pay for an L 10mbs connection and usually get 8mbs.0

I've seen these 'support pop-ups' before , and not just at VM , best to ignore them altogether!0

10mb to 2.4 sounds like the throttling has kicked in (IIRC on L it's 75% for about 4 or 5 hours).
Did you download anything, or watch a lot of online video this afternoon/evening?0 -
Yes it turns out it was my OH watching live baseball stream. Never had a problem before. Think we will have to move to Sky Unlimited (see new thread)0
