He keeps checking up if you're ok is due to his position. Any employee who displays obvious depression or shock due to work may leave, or at worst, sue the company for a lump of cash. It's part of his job to prevent this. It won't look good on a manager's profile if one of his employees leave because she was threatened by a customer.
This has nothing to do with being nice.0 -

I'd suggest the OP is in a better position to judge if he is nice or not. Doing his job properly doesn't mean he's not being nice, or that he is being nice.Do you really want to spend 10-20 years working for Sainsburys to get promoted to team leader, to trainee department manager, to department manager, to store manager, and only then earn less than £25k pa? The number of times you need to be promoted just to earn that salary is insane.
Some people don't have the ability (for whatever reason) to earn vast sums of money, some don't want to, if the OP is happy in this job then good on them0 -
The guy should never have stepped behind the counter - that as far as i'm concerned should be enough to bar the guy end of story if for nothing else than the hygiene element! Second yeah your manager was doing his job, but ultimately it'd shock you the number of line managers who simply wouldn't be able to do that - fair play to the guy for looking out for his staff.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

OP - Ignore the obvious trolls who have nothing better to do....0

Glad your colleagues were nice to you - it can shake anyone up a bit when things go a bit awry and people are aggressive. In some places though the customer is always right no matter what they do, so it's good that the right action was taken. Probably due to a mix of following procedure and just being nice - managers can do both!
I worked at a supermarket one Christmas years ago and I really enjoyed it.
P.S. I also know a supermarket manager who earns over £120,000 a year by the time he's had all his bonuses, and it's not one of the most massive stores either! So they can be a good career choice if you are that way minded.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Tbh it is nice that he stuck up for you, as like you say in many places customer is king.
But as for the snide comments about pay - money is not the be all and end all in life. I personally would rather work in a job where i've got enough money to live on reasonably without having to deal with the stress, worry and extra responsibilities that the higher roles generally seem to come with. You can end up in lower paid roles (i'm in one) where you end up stressed up to the eye balls due to never being supported in any area, but the people you work with ultimately make your job not any amount of money:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one:beer::beer::beer:

The manager was doing his job which was backing you up but from what you say you did no wrong. Nice to have read your experience OP from a fellow colleague.0

Youre a girl. Theyre a bunch of guys. Simple as.
Someone also hit the nail on the head. Manager was doing their job. Staright up.!
Spot on...the manager was doing his job.
Its got nothing to do with being personable...just doing his job...and you are lucky if you manager is like that with you...because I can tell you there are companies that could not give a sh** about the people they work for. ( I'd love to name, names but won't.) Like where I work...through the company I have had an meeting with a Councellor and have been diagnosed with "acute stress"...now the team manager knows about this ... and nothing .. zip, not a word ... how you doing etc., And if he coming towards me in the corridor, that one doesn't hide his disgusted very well ...0 -
What a lovely story OP
I have worked part time in retail for the past 8 or so years and in my experience you would be lucky to get a manager to do their job if it involves sticking up for their staff. My current manager has the opinion that the customer is always right and its horrible being shouted at by customers and knowing you can do nothing about it! I worked in sainsburys for a while and they were really friendly to work for
