Compensation from Credit Card Company

I spend months abroad each year and have never been asked to show my passport when using a credit card (for purchases). I suppose it might happen somewhere - but not in my travels (mostly SE Asia, far east, also Europe and occasionally US/Canada). Most of my spend is foreign.schrodinga wrote: »CC companies penalise customers when they do something wrong with late charges etc, so I don't see why it shouldn't work the other way when they are in the wrong.
Yeah, but it is governed by the T+Cs. The T+Cs state charges that apply if you pay late, etc, but also state that declines can happen as can system failure for which they will not be liable. It might seem one sided - but actually the experience is that CCs are often lenient for "first time" offences.
Sounds like they made a mistake. But I still feel the bulk of responsibility lies with you for relying on a particular card working at a particular time when the T+Cs explicitly warn that declines can happen.0 -

I regularly go to Florida and am consistently asked for passport identification when using a credit card. As we're going to the States on honeymoon, I'm just trying to manage that risk appropriately0 -
Book ther flights in your maiden nameDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Wish I could, but my drivers licence doesn't have a photo as still the old paper copy. I've had no requirement (up until now and the wedding) to update it as all my other details are correct.0 -

Why didn't you just book everything in your maiden name until after the honeymoon ? There's no rule that says everything has to be different on the day of he wedding ! You've just complicated things for yourself by trying to change things too soon.
I've never been asked for my passport as id in Florida either.0 -

My passport needed to be renewed as it naturally expired in May, I need at least six months validity on my passport to travel outside of the EU. I had the choice of renewing in my current name or my married name. As the passport lasts 10 years and my H2B was keen for me to switch names (I wasnt overly fussed!), I took it out in my married name. No biggie as there is a clear process for doing this in advance of the wedding.
If my passport is in my married name, then technically everything else needs to follow suit. Everything has been fairly straight forward, with the exception of this credit card...0 -
Stop scrounging for compo.
Grow up. You technically was commiting fraud by having a credit token in a name that wasn't yours.
Move on.
You are entitled to no compo.
I want compo from you for reading this thread.0 -
Blimey, why is everyone being so nasty to the newbie?
The nub of this issue seems to me that the cc company has cancelled the existing card before providing the new card. This could have happened to anyone changing their name at any time.
Essentially the OP could have said "I've recently changed my name and informed my cc company. My new cc hadn't arrived by the time the bank said it would so I rang them to check. They said they would send another one and cancel the first one. Instead they cancelled my existing card which meant I was unable to pay for an important purchase"
Would you all have flamed her for that? Compensation may not really be realistic, but seriously.....
She needed a new passport so what's the point in getting one in her maiden name and then paying for it to be altered later? Not so moneysaving.... I've been asked for photo ID in Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco and (surprisingly) Barcelona - so it does happen.
Oh, and Melbell - using two names is only fraudulent if there's an intention to defraud. It's blindingly obvious that this isn't the case here.0
