How to remove Sky debt collectors

I am new to forums and any help will gratefully be received. I left sky 2 months ago which was very difficult as they claimed I had not stopped all my services but just broadband - paid extra months. Now without a letter have a bogus bill for £22 sent by debt collection agency. I have great credit history and do not want to jeopardize it but feel I am being extorted to pay money I do not owe. I have had no further bill from sky or contact. I will contact sky first thing in the morning, any advise or similar experience will be gratefully received.

Some will say to simply ignore the debt collectors as for the sake of £22 they are unlikely to do anything at all other than hound you on the phone and by post for a few months.
Others would say to tell them the debt is disputed and go back to Sky and resolve the issue of if there is an outstanding amount or not with them.
When I had similar issues with Telewest I went for option 2 and got it sorted after a few weeks.0 -
Did you give Sky permission to report your financial dealings? If not, your credit file cannot be interfered with - they would have to take you to court, you lose, then NOT pay the disputed debt within 21 days. Don't be harassed - just maintain that you have had no proof that the debt claimed is legitimate, and wait until they do.0
