Bear in mind though it is not nice to offer to pay someone cash and expect them to do it cheaper because of that - it puts people on the spot and if they are honest and putting everything through their books (which they should be!) then paying cash would not make any difference to the price.

who said anything about not putting it through the books?

A cheque - you have to take it home find an envelope and a stamp try and remember the address of your bank, which you cant cos even though you been there a million times you dont know the actual address, then go to a post box and back, and wait for it to be delivered.

Then wait even more for it to clear, then ten days later you still dont know for certain if its cleared or not, so you phone the bank and wait on hold for 2 hours then try to remember your password and details.... and now you then have to go to the cash machine.

    or........

Cash - take it, spend it!

I'll accept your appology by letter in the post or I can knock a few quid off and let you post it here, as thats a little easier :)

yes I am a smart ars* but I been plastering for 20 odd years and I know what I'm on about.

Ok I apologise - we might be able to knock a pound off if someone paid cash.

I meant that people who offer cash usually expect a big discount and really it doesnt warrant a big discount (unless they were not going to put it through the books)
  • How much do you/or your husband earn a week.Ive been plastering for 22 years and come across people like you every day.now work it out if you are self employed and working/living in this country paying a mortgage.running a car/van or both have kids to feed, how much would you have to charge a day to make a living taking into account your pension your ni contributions, your holiday pay, life inusrance as well as public liabilty, your profit margin and above all your income tax.It seems to me people with money and good jobs dont want to pay the full price of a job,if i wanted to work 100% legit i wouldnt get any work, yet the people i work for are earning scandalous amounts of money and begrudge the little man who wants to earn an honest living.I could go on.As far as im concern £280 is cheap,if you take out all the costs, but you as like most would have it done for £20 less if you thought you was getting a bargain, then again £20 would be a nice tip for your personal waiter next time your in south africa on your hols.So ive said my piece and i will apologise if you are not anything like the person i have mentioned above.

    Blimey!
Can't people ask simple questions on here anymore?
If every tradesperson was squeaky clean and honest, people like Oxfordblue wouldn't need to ask on forums like this.

I've just been quoted £250 for a similar sized kitchen to reboard and skim following a water leak from our shower.

I did however also have another quote for £500 so it just re-emphasises the advice of shopping around for a few quotes.

I meant that people who offer cash always expect to pay less and we dont like it! my husband charges about £150 per day - we have had to go VAT registered because our turnover is £70,000!!! our profit margin is around 30% though - our profit for this year will be about £26,000 before tax - thats between 2 of us! ours costs are massive - advertising, fuel, insurance - my husband works 70 hours most weeks and I work at least 30.

I am too scared to take cash jobs - my friends works for the IR and she tells me loads about how they follow people for years without them knowing.

EVERYONE wants something for nothing - look at the other thread on here - someone said that a joiner should hang doors for £15 per door - £90 a day!!! that wouldnt even cover our outgoings! people think the price they are paying is going straight in your pocket!

I just meant that customers shouldnt expect to get the job for loads less if they pay cash - in reality it is you taking the risk and you would have to pay it back if the IR caught you, so they should pay full price in cash out of kindness for a good job if that was the case...

Sorry, went on a bit then didnt I?

Now we are on the subject of plastering I'm after my bedroom being plastered before MFI arrive with my bedroom suite. How much would a 17ft x 10ft be, it has 2 doors and a massive window which is about 300cm wide and about 42" in height, (sorry about the metrics) normal 4 walls and a ceiling which has a small stipple effect on, but I wouldn't mind that reartex in the pairs design, got a guy coming round tonight to give a quote but just wanted to know whats a reasonable price. Depends where you live too but between £250 and £400

Some rooms are much easier than others.
