Huge increase in cost of washing powder/liquid

  • I have 10 white shirts a week - five of dh and five for ds. I just didn't get the results with the value stuff I tried (Mr S, but I guess its all the same).

Im getting good results from Ariel, 30degree wash, spray the worst bits with stain remover.

Any heads up for a good own brand/value/smartprice that is really good on white shirts?

I use white vinegar for softener, with good results. Saw someone recommend 9fluid oz for a wash - I put a splash in. Is this right?

I use ecover as anything else makes my son itch. I don't use as much as the bottle recommends and it seems to clean perfectly well. Tescos often have it on offer when I need to stock up.

Another recipe for making your own, and conditioner as well.

the thing is that is actually a recipe for laundry liquid, not powder; which is alright but I have heard it is best stored in a bucket with a lid-this is a bit of a hazard with small kiddos around xx

ive gone back to powder from the liqitabs

they were getting so expensive and im lucky we have a makro near by and they do deals on washing powder

and im not using there "recommended amount" i use a third to half what they say, sometimes i add the odd spoon of soda crystals too.
I wash on a lower wash temp too, mostly a 30deg unless its bedding and i do that on a hotter wash

and it all gets clean and sometimes even more so , then what they tell you to use

thats exactly my method though I find that washing on less than 40 doesn't work for us. For some things I use soda crystals or a bit of soap flakes and vinegar alone-for example silk or woollen garments they are fine washed in the machine on a delicate setting with a tiny bit of either soda crystals or a teaspoon or two of soap flakes and then some vinegar in the fabric softener section of the drawer, I have some really delicate silk traditional outfits with embroidery and sequin/bead work, and they still look brand new years later after doing this. I found washing them by hand I could never get the water out enough and the excess water would damage the fibres, so a gentle spin has its advantage too. I use whatever works out cheapest on offer that I can use coupons with too; sometimes that is liquid or gel, rather than powder. For example persil's offers on liquid and gel seem to work out far cheaper per wash than offers on their boxes of powder xx
  • I too hate paying the huge prices for washing powder and checked this on ebay, it says that it is 'branded' but doesnt mention the name,

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Washing-Powder-2-x-10-Kilo-Bags-Leading-Brand-Only-5-delivery-/280819373764?pt=UK_WSJL_Wholesale_GL&hash=item41622396c4

Mentioned it to my OH who wasnt keen on the idea, as he said it could be made up of anything, yet all the reviews seem positive. Has anyone tried it?

In the end I went to B&M and stocked up on 2 x 100 wash surf for £9.99 each, which will last a while, but it would be nice to buy 700 washes for £16 and forget about it for a year!

What they're selling on ebay looks similar to when they used to sell powder by the bag in those shops they used to have with big drums of various items sold by weight. One question would be why would they be crushing up powder tabs made by a leading manufacturer unless there was some kind of issue with it? Though sometimes you do get an iffy batch where the powder used to make the tabs is fine but just doesn't turn into a solid block, so maybe they just crush it back down again, judging by the fragrance of fabric conditioner they sell I suspect this is persil and comfort stuff-just a hunch (blue skies is a comfort fragrance so I'd presume to keep costs down they'd be getting the powder from the same unilever source).

    xx
  • I'd be careful about buying washing powder from Ebay, or from anywhere else where a big box of powder is very cheap. I saw something on the telly about fake washing powder being sold cheap. It won't do you or your clothes any good. They will counterfeit anything nowadays, it seems.

I gave up using branded washing powder months ago and have been using Asda Chosen By You liquitabs. They are £3.87 for 20 (or less when they are on offer, I think they have 36 packs on offer for £5.00 at the moment). I haven't used fabric conditioner for years and honestly can't tell any difference (even with towels).

Tesco's own (the one in the bag) was £1.67.. I noticed yesterday that it's now £2.59. Still fairly cheap than the well known ones I know. but I won't be buying it now at that price.

Prefer to shop elsewhere anyway to buy special offers !!
thats what i found but i had to get the powder but could have kicked myself for not getting more when it was cheaper

  • Time to stock up on Daz Powder [shed always smells better with a shelf full of the stuff;)] ...£4.00 for 38 washes in Tesco until 3.4.12 [i think].
Glass always half empty, never half full and what's this 'impluse buying'?
