Error in garage invoice - chasing me for remainder
Today I had my car serviced by Halfords Autocentres, and during the service + MOT, I was informed that I would need new tyres, to which I agreed, and when it came to paying, I knew the tyres would be just over the £50 mark, and when I glimpsed at the invoice I ended up seeing they came to around £90 for both. As there were 2 lots of disposal, new valves and wheel balancing, I didn't think they had only charged for one tyre!! I actually thought they were trying to undercut the web price.
When I got home, I had a message on my voicemail asking to call them back, plus an e-mail to say that they had only charged for one tyre, and apologised about the invoice and to call back at my earliest convenience.
After going on the website and putting in the same details for my car, I found that the tyres cost £55 each fully fitted, with a note that it includes the balancing, valves and disposal, and there's a code to get £5 off each tyre, bringing the cost down to just over £100 for 2 tyres.
I'm not sure legally where I stand in this situation. They gave me an invoice for the services received and I paid in full. Also, if they want to chase me for the rest, I feel a bit ripped off if I am to pay an extra £70 (they already taken the money for the balancing etc for 2 tyres), as the website page is offering what I've received today for only £10 more.
Just want to check what rights they have to chase me for their error, and if they do, if I have any rights to just pay the difference as advertised on their website or whether they can chase me for the full £70 which they would have charged if the invoice was correct.

Just thought I'd clarify, in the messages left, the voicemail message only asked me to call back, and the e-mail only asks to call to settle the outstanding payment with no mention of what the amount is.0

You presumed that they were trying to undercut the web price, but yo didnt know the web price till after you got home????
You should have asked how much the work (tyres) was going to be before you gave them the go ahead.
Print off the relevant web page, they may honour it, but dont hold your breath.
Look on the invoice, it will say somewhere E&Oe, Errors and Ommisions excepted. So if they have made an error they can chase it.
But show them the web page and see what they say.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I'm afraid you made the mistake by not asking prior to the cost before agreeing for them to do the work .
You presumed how much it will cost .
Online price difference you have found does It include things like, new valves, wheel balancing, and small charge for disposal of old tyres .
My advice to you in future keep well away from these Big companies . Find good local garage and use them instead you got off cheaply with your MOT .0 -
And do your research on the internet before you buy anything.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Looks like I've missed something out here. When I spoke to them on the phone, and they informed me that I'd need new tyres plus the windscreen wipers, they did tell me the total of how much it would cost, and quickly working it out in my head, and knowing that Kwik Fit charged £60 per tyre a few years ago, I felt fine to go ahead.
If they had told me the true cost of the tyre, I would not have given the go ahead, but instead questioned the cost and then ask why the tyres are so expensive especially since the online price was cheaper (I did look before heading off)
Also, on the invoice, there is no mention of E&Eo. The online price quoted by themselves did include all the balancing, disposal, and valves.0 -
So what did they quote and what did you pay?0
-
When I spoke to them, they told me the one of the tyres was an MOT fail, and the other was almost an MOT fail, and advised replacing on both. They also said the windscreen wiper had to be replaced, and then when I asked how much it would be, was told just over £110. Thinking this sounded about right, I then asked which tyres they were fitting, and they said it was Firestone. The invoice matched what I was told on the phone, so I had no reason to think that it was incorrect.0

So you were quoted over £110, how much over?
So what did you actually pay? Over £110 or £110?0 -
I was quoted the exact figure of £112.32 which was what I paid on the invoice for the tyres and wipers. I was just rounding the figures for the forum post, but I was given details of the extra costs involved before giving the go ahead. As far as I was concerned I was happy to go at that price, and my only query was which brand of tyres I'd be having. When arriving at the garage, I looked at what everything had cost, and the extras amount was the same as I had been quoted, so was happy to pay that amount.0

If they quoted the price, you accepted and paid that amount then tough on them. You can't come back later and ask for more. Ignore them.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
