  • More than likely. I know when my Son leaves education I will lose £700 in WTC/CTC and HB plus £233 CSA which is why I am currently looking at doing a qualification to give me more chance of getting a £28000 salary that I would need to sustain our current lifestyle

If you want to keep your current job you can always find a second job. Also if your son will be staying at home and working he will be contributing

you may get some help from housing benefit

You may still be entitled to some housing benefit but your son will be down as a dependent and your benefit adjusted accordingly.
Why are you only working 16 hours just now? Whats stopped you getting a full time job before now?

    Are you a single parent?

Lone parents are not affected by the change in hours to receive WTC which is increasing to 24 hours per week for couples with children on 06 April. They can still work 16.

You will lose child benefit for him if you currently qualify and child tax credits for him, not sure of the exact date when they will cease but other members may know.

He can pay you keep from his job or from Job Seekers Allowance which will go some way to offsetting the reduction.

You can also model the impact on your benefits and do a 'better off calculation' if you want to investigate getting a second part time job or moving to full time employment. Do this on the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

a full time job is between 37 and 40 hrs a week. thats what you need to be aiming for to see you into the future as your son will leave home eventually x

You'd be better looking for a full time job than one with only 30 hours.

I'm in a similar position, my daughter leaves 6th form this summer then hopefully goes to university in September, but I won't be able to go out to work because I'm a full-time carer for my husband. We don't get CTC because we're still under the old system and we get money for our daughter in with my husbands Incapacity Benefit, I'm cutting back now and trying my hardest to clear any debts because we're going to have quite a drop in income.

  • Unless you meet some other criteria you need to be working a minimum of 30 hours per week to continue to get wtc.

It doesn't have to be with the same employer, or PAYE only, it can be a mix of PAYE/self employed or a number of PAYE employers to get to the necessary hours.
