Winning the lottery and DLA

Just heard about a man who won 4.3 million on the lottery, the man is in reciept of DLA high rate care, low rate mobility, he has refused to give up his DLA as he says its his right to have it and does not feel guilty in still recieving it.

He is right I guess, he claimed for it and was found in enough need to be granted it, he has a right to it. BUT in my honest opinion he doesnt need it any more, yes its not means tested, but compared to what he won its just a few pounds a month! He will never spend it and it will just sit in his bank gathering interest along with the millions he won.

I feel he should give up the benefit, anything he needs he can buy himself and unless he buys a house for millions, he wont put a dent in the money he won, he could get all the highest priced adaptions he needs (if he needs any) He could afford the most expensive care package and live the life of Riley. Why would he want to take money from the goverment when others are fighting for payment and being refused because we are in such a state?

Others may not agree with me, but I feel its mean and greedy for him to continue to get this benefit and with as much money as he has now DLA should stop paying him, I mean surely there must be a cut off point when it comes to non means tested benefits, how can they justify handing out benefits to a millionarie?
not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!

If it was OK for Cameron to claim it for his son, then it is OK for this lottery winner!
Besides which £4.3m is chicken feed compared to what Cameron & family are worth!

Kelvin McKenzie was taken out for a bacon sandwich by Len Goodman because he didn't need the money he got for the Winter Fuel Allowance.....

  • OP, why are you worrying yourself with this persons life? They are within the law, until that is changed you're just huffing and puffing for no reason. Isn't there enough stress and worry about your own life and benefits to be bothered about this? I know that's the case for me.

Besides, DLA is an 'access' benefit, he may not be able to renew his blue badge without it, or access other services related to his disabilities.

Sometimes on this site you can't start a simple debate without being accused of huffing and puffing and basically being told to get on with your own life and mind your own business!

Yea I have got stress in my life, I will probably fail my medical when I'm called in for one for ESA, I will probably lose my DLA when PIP comes in and why, because millionaire greedy people are taking up benefits they don't need to have, and no I don't agree with prime ministers family receiving the benefit and more than likely jumping the queue as well, and if the age old reply comes up "it's only cos your jealous" my reply to that would be of course I'm !!!!!!!g jealous I would love to be a millionaire!

I'd love to know where you got the statistics to show the income of these 'millionaire greedy people' and what percentage they make up of the total DLA claimants.

I wouldn't relinquish my DLA if I won the lottery, why should I spend my winnings on care when normal lottery winners get to !!!! it up buying houses, cars and fancy holidays?

when did things get so distorted that any kind of suffering gets equated to a financial figure, how can money make a medical condition better?

You don't require HRM to access a Blue Badge.

As for other services, I can't think of any unless you are talking about Disability Premiums for means tested benefits and WTC.

    Have I missed something?

It's not the money though it's the DLA label! If you don't get DLA then a lot of disabled things don't class you as disabled. The thing I'm thinking about is music festivals, i try to go to 1 a year. If I didn't get DLA then I wouldn't be able to camp in the disabled area, use the viewing platforms for disabled people or store my meds in their fridge.

Most of the festivals I've been to don't accept GP letters so if I didn't claim DLA I could have all the money in the world and still not be able to do something I enjoy.

    Some councils do require it.

You also need it to claim free car tax.

Some councils will only offer social services help with a DLA claim.

Unfortunately there is not a one size fits all service.

IMO there should be an effective way of 'registering' as disabled that does not involve having to make a DLA claim. At least then people who do not wish to claim would have the necessary means to claim the 'access' benefits DLA gives access to.
