Is the only advantage to Eneloop type batteries that they retain their charge when stored?

Are ordinary rechargeable batteries more appropriate for high drain device, such as a remote control car?

When you think about the savings in time and worrying about charging them before use, this alone is a good feature.

The other advantage is they maintain far nearer full voltage throughout most of their discharge than other batteries I've used. mAh ratings are not the full situation. Most electrical devices like digital cameras or tape players stop working when the battery voltage drops below a certain point, say 80% of the rating even though there's plenty of energy left, so you can, and very commonly do, have high mAh batteries that perform in many applications far worse than the lower mAh eneloop batteries that stay above this voltage for far longer. I know my digital camera used to give me maybe 20-30 minutes taking photos with regular rechargeable, about an hour with disposables, and now with the eneloop batteries it lasts basically for a whole day out, sometimes two. Even if I last charged the batteries weeks ago.

Because of their lower rate of voltage drop during use, I think the eneloop batteries may perform better. It depends why your items stop working, is it because the battery is flat or just because the voltage has dropped too low?
