Is this a reasonable or OTT price for felling a large conifer etc?

I don't think these particular type of trees are protected in any way (although I will double check) and I know there are rules regarding tree work if you live in a conservation area which luckily we don't. But thanks for the warning.0 -
we paid £200 in December to have the following done.
- 30 ft conifer cut down, and removed
- 6 ft taken off the top of a holly tree and tided up, off cuts removed
- triming tops and side of 30ft conifer hedge, debris removed.

We had a 15ft pine tree removed for insurance purposes (next door said it was causing their subsidence... we think their cheap tatty extension was causing the subsidence! Anyway) and it cost £300 to have the tree removed and the stump ground down.
I'm in the same boat. I've got a 30-40ft pine tree in the garden that has to go. I was guessing we are in for the best part of a grand to get rid of it! Your post has confirmed this for me.Well behaved women rarely make history.0 -

Oh no! what some neighbours try to get away with!
It might not be so bad, I had 2 more people come to quote but they're going to send me the quotes when they're ready, so I'll update once I have those. I was much more impressed with the two who came today they looked at the tree more and didn't just pluck a figure from the air!
Although funnily enough a completely different one who was apparently doing some work nearby came and asked if I'd thought of having my front conifers trimmed, so I got a quote from him too for felling my big tree, he said £600 all in, but I'm less inclined to use him as I don't really like to give work to people who knock on the door although he seemed genuine, didn't have an Irish accent!I asked if he had insurance etc, he said yes.
Edit to say: I definitely won't be using the door knocker, I have a better price already from a reputable tree surgeon.0 -
Have another quote in, much happier :j
Large Leylandii
Sectional dismantle to ground level
Chipped and removed
£450 inc VAT
Then
Grind stump out by mechanical means
£132 inc VAT
They also quoted me £198 inc VAT to fell the cypress hedge to ground level and £138 inc VAT to grind out the stumps, but I'm in two minds about the hedge now after talking to these people, so that might stay a while yet. I might just get it trimmed which costs £90 inc VAT
What I also didn't realise is if they start work and birds are nesting they have to leave it and come back September time.0 -
Should'nt be too much of a problem for leylandii, not to many birds nest in these.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

That sounds very reasonable and nice to pay a bit extra, might not be very MSE-ish but I bet he was so happy especially in December0 -

Oo really, that's handy to know, he said I'd know because birds would be in and out of there, I'll have to keep an eye on it, although looking up into the tree I can't see any nests but of course I can't see to the top.0 -

Here the blackbirds do, and very successfully, as our cats can't be arrised to climb them!0 -
So you now have a number of quotes , yes the first was more expensive BUT nearer than some 'quotes' posted on this thread .Rip-Off merchant by the sounds of it
