    So many people are complaining...it does say something about the customer base that Asda has.

    I've only ever used a cheque to pay car tax, and now that's done online my cheque book is obsolete.

    I support getting rid of cheques as a means of payment on the high street full stop, and only keeping them as part of the banking system where it is necessary - such as refunds from places like utility companies etc. Cheques will never totally disappear.

    Those that use them when they haven't got the funds need some financial organisation - this thread only exists because one company out of many has finally been brave enough to stop taking them.

    I sometimes shop at Asda for convenience more than anything, and when I saw the notice outside I thought 'that will catch those out on low incomes, and those that deliberately use cheques to use the delay in the system'.

    Eating and drinking is the most important thing in life so those that have no money when they shop need to look at their priorities.
  • My cheque book is obsolete also. In fact I think I've had it since May 2004 and still got about 75% of the cheques left. I uch prefer using my debit card as it gives a true reading of what money is in my acocunt. The minute I use it, it shows in my account so I know that whatever my balance shows - is all I can spend.
  • I work for ASDA and have done for almost 3 years, Im a checkout operator and I can honestly say that we never took many cheques anyway

    I had a lady tonight, get our her cheque book, start to sign it and I say Im sorry I cant accept it as we are not accepting cheques and havent been accepting cheques since January 1st 2007. Since we started the no cheques policy - I must have seen 2 people attempt to use a cheque, We have had notices on each and every checkout since october last year so our customers have had MORE THAN ENOUGH notice !! To be honest our customers used their cards and cash more than cheques !
  • As far as Im aware its not jsut ASDA that has stopped accepting cheques

    * Tesco
    * Boots
    * WHSmith

    have also stopped taking cheques

    As far as I am aware Tesco still accepts cheques but won't accpet any that are written for an amount over the cheque guarantee amount.

    My local Tesco has not accepted cheques for a while now.
