Asda stopping payment by cheque

I was in my local Asda the other day and it was announced over the tannoy that they will stop accepting payments by cheque from the 15/4/07.
I'm upset over this because at the end of the month i'm always a bit skint and I use this method to pay for my shopping knowing that the money will be in my account before the cheque is cashed.
I think it's a terrible thing to do to the customers. We've all done it at one time or another. They aren't stopping it for business reasons, purely on the grounds of "people have to wait another minute" for the cashire to write down 3 bits of info on the back of the cheque.
If you shop at Asda please check it out. I was told by one of the staff that they are trying to keep this quiet.
Hope this info helps people.

They stopped in my local Asda last year
they must have trialled it. Many other shops do not take them now - Boots, Debenhams , some garages
the main reason is cheque fraud, not for the time it takes
Edit - I thought that was the reason but see this article from April 2006 but cutting queues:

and then boots:

Well I didn't know that thanks!

Lots of shops no longer accept cheques. You are not supposed to present a cheque if there are no funds for it at the time you write it anyway.
How were they keeping it quiet if they were announcing it over the tannoy?Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well
What I meant was I was talking to the announcer who was broadcasting this over the tannoy AGAINST the stores wishes. They had been told that customers were not to be told. She thought it was rotten and had handed in her notice that morning cos she's so fed up working there. I saw her being reprimanded but she seemed to tell the supervisor to "go away"

While I applaud the asda workers public spiritedness, I dont think 1 person leaving will make them acept cheques again.
I think that most shops are now going away from accepting cheques to be honest. They are a pain to process and people should not use them to pay for things a couple of days before pay day as they have no money as you are not allowed to write a cheque if the money is not available at that moment to honour it. (Even though people do this to get through the month, and I understand why they would do that)
I cant remember the last time I used a cheque. You also cannot know when the person/company you have written the cheque to is going to pay it in. They do have 6 months to do this, which could come as a shock when a cheque you wrote 6 months ago, have forgotten about is suddenly put through your bank account!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Sorry I'm in a bit of a juvenile mood because it's Friday and the weekend is almost here. Your post made me smile."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

Hmm. I don't know which is worse - being in the queue behind someone who is paying by cheque, or being in the queue behind someone who is making a scene about the fact that their cheque payment is being rejected, together with the groceries that they're clearly not going to pay for any other way cluttering up the conveyer.
I appreciate the point that we shouldn't really be drawing cheques when we don't have the funds to support it - but people do. I'm sure that cheque encashment services at local pawnbrokers will continue to exist. If you don't have the money but still want the groceries, then go to the pawnbroker first. They can be pricey, though - so it would be better to use a credit card.0
