beware vodafone £5 update charge abroad

I was in kenya during january and got in total 4 texts saying i was being charged £5 a time for internet use even though i had not been using the internet
i contacted vodafone by email after first text pointing out i had little email access and asking them to reply by text i got the usual can't deal with you due to data protection email
on return after 3 emails i finally got a reply that my phone was updating itself once a week apparently
there was no mention of this on the vodafone site i looked before going away and the customer support person i emailed first could have told me. particularly as i am sure many people have this problem,
after a further bout of emails vodafone have offered me a derisory £5
The problem is each email is answered by a different person so there is no continuity and they never reply to the points made in the email just spout the company line
So watch out this does not happen to you and turn off the internet connection if you are not going to use it!
or better still stay away from vodafone
