Not petrol, but my daughter had her hair cut in London last week and then found that she didn`t have her card (twin sis had `borrowed` it). The shop took her student card off her and we paid the bill the next morning. Poor girl was really embarassed.
I used to work in the local garage and when this happened we would take the car reg and name/address of the customer, giving them 24 hours to pay. If they looked especially dodgy,we were told to take their photo with the polaroid camera kept behind the counter. I refused to do this as it felt wrong, and the CCTV camera was pointing at them anyway.

    Hi All,

Thats always one thing I did consider, as once they've cut your hair they can't exactly uncut it or return it! At least with petrol, you could in theory leave the car there and get some money!

Owing to a set of circumstances I managed to leave the house one day in the wrong trousers and went and filled up the car .. no debit cards, no credit cards, no cash, no id .. nothing. I went in explained and the chap who simply told me to come in at some point the following day ... I guess they had my registration (although that could have also been false).

I returned about 30 mmutes later with the money .. very embarassing, but the assitant assured me it happens all the time

I filled the car with petrol once, then when I went in to pay I realised I had left my debit card behind and only had a cashcard. I explained my situation to the cashier, I had to fill in a form with my details and they then said I could go to a cashpoint and come back. I went back with the money about 20 minutes later and she said she was a little surprised as often people don't bother!

I work in retail and the thing is most cases is due to lack of funds in the customers account. If you were to do some manual method incase anything went down you have know way of knowing if you'd ever get the payment. Also it's massively open to fraud as it's back to signatures again.

Also when the bank requests the shops to call for a manual authorisation or when it says refferal B on the machine or please call then the shop assitant says cards been declined and the bank thinks your cars been stolen.

I too forgot my credit card once. The garage wanted to take my tax disc off me-saying i could have it back when i brought the money(bearing in mind its illegal not to disply a tax disc) we ended up having an arguament-I offered to leave some jewellery or my mobile phone instead-I later rang the police just to confirm with them my intention to pay-whereby the snotty pc told me garages are always having these problems (yep i sympathise) and i could be arrested for not paying..I asked to speak to his sargeant to complain who told me,yes his pc had been over zealous, and if i didnt have a criminal intent of course it wasnt theft, and no the garage shouldnt take my tax disc off me.whew! rant over!

I'm wary of solely relying on plastic alone if I fill up. I always make sure that I have sufficient cash to cover any cost. Why? Well I work for a bank and systems go down and there have been a few documented instances of systems of companies like Visa International going down and the customer is left looking like a dope with insufficient credit. And I'm purely talking about the documented instances and not even mentioning the undocumented ones.......
