I needed a WAV for my Mum but because she was 78 when she became disabled she didnt qualify for any financial assistance. We live in a tiny village, the buses are not wheelchair accessible and neither are the trains as we are on a branch line.
It cost me £100 to get a wheelchair accessible cab to take her to a family event 20miles away!
I guess once you reach over 70yrs old you are just supposed to sit indoors all day.0 -

I would have thought she would qualify for attendance allowance -if she is in a wheelchair and unable to transfer to a standard car she presumably has care needs too.
Try re-applying as this would help with her taxi fares.
Even lower rate is nearly £50 a week0 -

By financial assistance - do you mean financial assistance towards the WAV advance payment, i.e. the Specialised Vehicles Fund?0 -

As I understand it, this is allowed, if you phone them first, to arrange cover.

The question remains if the DLA was granted properly of course, but simply doing deliveries doesn't answer that one way or another.0 -

Sorry I obviously wasnt clear. Mum does qualify for Attendance Allowance and I moved back home to become her carer. What we couldnt get is any help with purchasing a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle.0 -

Yes, that is what I meant. I tried all sorts of avenues to obtain funding and eventually had to borrow some money from a friend (thankfully interest free as he is a true DIAMOND).0 -

My sister's father-in-law was getting admitted to a care home for some respite - the home is about half a mile away from his house. The wheelchair taxi had to come from out of town as there are none here and it cost £24 for a trip that took about 5 minutes.0 -

If the trip was that short, I would have been tempted to push him there in the wheelchair.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

Also his wife is in her 80s and has and 2 hips replaced and his son has also had a hip replacement. No other family. Sometimes it's just not practical.0
