Woodburner - soot reducing additives

Options
Friends 'say' the Zip or Stovax soot reducer sachets really do work, and of course, the adverts confirm that.

I don't intend to dodge regular sweeping, but if the soot can be rendered more sweepable then these may be worth the cost.

Does anyone have any firm views about these products?

Thanks very much.

As a sweep myself I both use and recommend them.

They dont reduce soot as such - if anything they create more, they break down the tar and creosote deposits in such a way as to turn them back to a sooty like consistancy making sweeping easier and getting a cleaner chimney / flue for you.

You still need to sweep as often as what you have been doing.

Is the timing important - would you suggest using them just before having the chimney swept?

I use the exact ones myself, I use maybe one or two a month as I burn a lot of wood.
