I bought an item on buy it now with the code and although I confirmed paypal it did not go through.

I contacted the seller and explained and they immediately cancelled the transaction. I was very impressed with them and will use them in the future.

You did not have to commit to buy BIN items. If you added the item to your basket and went to check out, applied code (seen if it was accepted or not), you could have backed out from that page without commiting to buy. The sale would have only went through after you logged into paypal AND pressed sumbit payment.

The code was accepted and submit payment was pressed, but the next day the item was showing as unpaid and no payment was showing on paypal either, so I was committed to buy.

On a normal BIN as soon as you comfirm your purchase you have bought the item, that is well before you even need to sign into PayPal.

The only time PayPal can be checked before committing to buy is if the seller has set up 'immediate payment required'.

If you add the buy it now item to 'basket', you are not commiting to buy until your payment has been accepted even if it requires immediate payment. I tested this with the £5 voucher, it worked on my account, my OH's and a friends account. I was even able to back out of the sale after entering the code and my paypal login details. It was only when I pressed 'submit payment' that I was commited to buy and by that point the payment was already taken.
