7 year old car worth £4000? Not likely. Not on a trade-in anyway. Dealer's not going to want to bother, so will give you low figures for it, no forecourt saleability.

GolfBravo, that middle-aged couple probably never took the car above 50mph so doubtless were blissfully unaware of the car's fault.

How on earth would you know how much my car is worth?? They've quoted me "up to" that, it's around the Parker's valuation, and also We Buy Any Car and We Want Any Car. On AutoTrader, private sales of comparable cars are on at around £5,500 (probably selling for around £5,000). Why don't I want to sell it privately then?? a) hassle, b) would need to spend £500 on noticeable niggles.

    Wear and tear.
Traders expect a few wear and tear on used cars, so it shouldn't be an issue with them.

Arent you just great at quoting things out of context to try to prove a point?

Have you updated that same thread that you took those quotes from to reflect the fact that your advice and understanding is clearly WRONG - ie, if you buy an eleven year old car and drive it for two months, it doesnt make the parts two months old - and that people do NOT have the right under the SOGA to EXPECT the parts to behave as if they are two months old.

Can you also confirm that the SOGA, Consumer Direct and Trading Standards DO take into account what might be normal wear and tear on a car, based on the age and price paid for the car?

I'd really like you to correct the false guidelines you gave on that thread as if you dont to be quite frank it shows your simply an internet keyboard warrior just trying to score points to make yourself feel better, as opposed to genuinely trying to help people on these threads?

Having had a moment to reflect on this, as you well know there is quite a difference between selling a car with a known issue and an issue developing down the line.

In this case there are many - car traders and otherwise - who find it deceitful to NOT disclose any hidden faults.

Or are you saying its ok for private individuals to do that?

Most used car dealerd wouldn't think twice about passing on a lemon. I don't see why it should be different the other way around.

They don't like it up 'em, Mr Mainwaring!

So because, in your opinion, SOME car dealers may be unscrupulous, then its ok to shaft ALL car dealers?

I'm NOT a trader but I still can't believe people look for advice on ways to maximise their "profit" by screwing others over like this. Actually, that's not true - I CAN believe it and think it's a terrible reflection of the society we live in!

    Well summarised.

My daily commute is 4 hours into London and back. Swindon to Pompey would be a breeze, even if I had to sit in a nice warm car, listening to Classical FM.

excellent i really hope you enjoy your daily grind
